1. Introduction
   1. Hook: So far, the proposed gun control bills in congress would have not stopped recent violent tragedies.
   2. Thesis: I disagree with an assault weapons ban and magazine capacity limits, both of which are active topics in congress today. I also am in favor of the abolishment of gun free zones, as they provide the opposite of what they were made to do. Such bans would not keep America safer. Furthermore, these bills infringe on the responsible citizens to exercise their second amendment freedoms. Instead of these bills, our politicians, who sometimes forget they work for us, not the other way around, and citizens should focus more on mental healthcare and research.

      2. Our freedoms are at risk due to gun control threats.
      3. Mental healthcare reform is the only practical thing to do, not condemn responsible citizens for a tool they own.

   1. Total deaths and what caused them (notecard section 1.)
      1.  According to the CDC’s website, there were 2,513,171 deaths in the United States for the year 2011.
      2. At least 8,583 people died from gun injuries in 2011 According to the FBI website.
      3. Gun deaths made only .34% of the total deaths in the US for the year 2011
      4. To give you perspective, the CDC estimated that 1.3 Million die from abortion each year in the United States, multiple times more than gun related deaths.
      5. Also according to the FBI statistics from 2011, 323 people died from rifles. The same report shows that 496 people were murdered with hammers and clubs.
      6. Gun free zones
         1. Sandy Hook Elementary School, Columbine, Virginia Tech and the Century 16 movie theaters in Colorado are all gun free zones. An area marked as a gun free zone gives a false sense of security. They provide the shooter with defenseless civilians, who cannot resist whatever the suspect plans to do.
         2.  According to John Lott, author the book “More Guns, Less Crime,” recently examined mass shootings. He stated that: (DIRECT QUOTE) “With just one single exception, the attack on congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in 2011, every public shooting since at least 1950 in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed has taken place in a gun free zone.”
