Lithuania arrests Russian national on US warrant

“Lithuania arrested Russian citizen Dmitry Ustinov a month ago,” he said. Russian diplomats met with the man called Dmitry Ustinov and recommended him a defense attorney. The warrant for his arrest was issued in Delaware.

Ustinov was seized at the Vilnius Airport. Lithuanian Prosecutor General’s Office refused to comment on the reasons behind the arrest of the Russian national in a phone call request from the Voice of Russia due to its “delicacy and seriousness.”

Dmitry Ustinov flew to Lithuania from the United States where he had allegedly been negotiating a deal to purchase banned night-vision devices. He is currently held at the Lukiškės Prison in downtown Vilnius.

Alexander Mamaev said the 46-year-old is suspected by the US of illegal arms trade, but has denied any wrongdoing.

The Consul personally met with the detained immediately after his arrest, which, as it turns out, had taken place over a month ago. According to Mamaev, “Russia can not yet demand Ustinov to be handed over into Russian custody” because the US has not received the material of the case.

The court will now have to indict the suspected arms trafficker within two days, while the Prosecutor General’s Office is waiting for the US to submit a formal request for his extradition. Then the court will consider whether to satisfy it or not.
If extradited, the Russian national may face 20 years in jail. The US allegedly accused Ustinov of trafficking or conspiring to traffic defense equipment blacklisted in the States, as well as of money laundering.
