Spartanburg Parent: Why Common Core “Math” is a Race to the Bottom

“I am in Spartanburg District 6. The biggest change we have seen thus far is in 6th grade math. Our students used to have the opportunity to take PreAlgebra in the 6th grade, Algebra 1 in the 7th and Geometry in the 8th grade. Now, all students are required to take Common Core Mathematics. They are grouped according to MAP and PASS scores, however, the highest level class is only about 2 days ahead of the lowest level. All are required to use the Carnegie book.
The book appears to be reteaching the concepts learned in 4th and 5th grade in a new way. I have yet to see the entire book since it is consumable and chapters are sent home as they are taught. My son is bored to death. Our district math person sent me an email explaining that the program is reliant on a computer software program and the kids will not have access to that until November. She will look at things again then. Our district decided to forge ahead with an untested, unproven curriculum that they are not able to fully implement. It is unacceptable.
The more I read about Common Core, the more angry I get! Sadly, few parents are even aware of the impact this is having. The only saving grace at our school is outstanding teachers. In many ways their hands are tied.
It’s time to stop Common Core now.
