Connor Calls on Graham to Restore Shaw AFB Nativity Scene

Orangeburg, SC- “I am very concerned about the Air Force’s decision to remove the Nativity scene at Shaw Air Force base for two Constitutional reasons.

The first is the obvious example of ‘religious viewpoint discrimination.’ Growing up on military bases and during my active duty career,I know firsthand just how much of a family’s surroundings are determined by regulations. Those rules are designed to promote a proper military culture not to force a political agenda. The regulation sited in this case is:

Air Force instruction 1.1 section 2.11. ‘Government Neutrality Regarding Religion. Leaders at all levels must balance Constitutional protections for an individual’s free exercise of religion or other personal beliefs and the Constitutional prohibition against governmental establishment of religion.‘

To interpret that regulation to prevent this kind of religious viewpoint expression actually promotes an anti-Christian agenda and shows preference over Christianity. This decision denies those who are obligated to live and/or work on the base their individual Constitutional freedoms.

Secondly, Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution gives the Congress the power ‘To make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces.’

The obligation to ensure that military families serving and working have religious expression rights falls to the members of the House and Senate not Pentagon bureaucracy or even, for that matter, the President.

I would like to know where Senator Graham stands on this issue. On this issue involving the military, freedom, the Constitution and his home state, his uncharacteristic silence is puzzling.

Maybe Senator Graham should spend less time criticizing the Egyptian military’s supposed violation of Egyptian constitutional freedoms and a little more time making sure that the American military and their families, for which he has real oversight responsibility, can exercise US Constitutional freedoms.

As a constitutional conservative, a combat veteran, and a South Carolinian, I am asking Senator Graham to take action to restore the Nativity scene at Shaw Air Force Base. Senator, you have the power and responsibility to make this right. It’s time to act.

The only thing more disturbing than military bureaucrats trampling on the Constitution, which they have sworn an oath to protect and defend, is the lack of immediate action from members of Congress, like Senator Graham, who’ve taken that same oath, to do their Constitutionally enumerated duty to restore freedom.”
