United Nations Cries Wolf On Climate Change

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

As if this will come as a surprise to anyone, but the United Nations is once again crying wolf about climate change. I suppose you have to give them credit for effort, but it’s clear they are not about to give up their mantra that climate change is real and brought on by global warming. Never mind that the Earth warms and cools in cycles that can be tracked, if only they would look at the facts that are available.

Their latest effort to push their agenda of the climate is changing comes in the form of a report from a United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC. Doesn’t that sound important and beyond reproach? That’s what they want us to believe. The less we question their science, which has already been proven to be incorrect, misleading, and downright wrong, the greater the likelihood we will accept them at their word and fall into line with their agenda. The report from the IPCC cries wolf on climate change in the worst kind of way.

USA Today – A rapid shift to less-polluting energy will be needed to avoid catastrophic global warming because global emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases have accelerated to unprecedented levels, the United Nations reports today.

These emissions — largely from the burning of oil, gas and coal — grew more quickly between 2000 and 2010 than in any of the three previous decades and will need to be slashed 40% to 70% by mid-century and almost entirely by century’s end to keep global temperatures from spiraling out of control, according to a landmark report by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Even those emissions cuts might not be enough. The IPCC report, striking a particularly urgent one, says countries might even need to enlist controversial technologies that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Okay, so that’s the gospel of climate change. Global emissions of greenhouse gases are higher than ever. Therefore, the world is about to be destroyed because the Earth is warming. How much has the Earth warmed? I’m glad you asked. Let’s look at a graph displayed on Skeptical Science. Their mission appears to be focused on advancing the entire theory of global warming and climate change. I’ll let their own graphs tell the tale.

Figure 3: Trend lines showing the sudden jump in temperatures in the 1995 La Niña (Green lines) and the 1998 (Pink lines) El Niño events. Brown line indicates overall increase in temperatures.

Can you see from the graph how the average global temperature has increased from 1979 to 2010? If you believe their data, it has increased a whopping less than half a degree Celsius. According to information provided in the post the graph accompanies, it lists the change as +0.2° Celsius or +0.38° Fahrenheit. They seem to be a bit mixed up on their information, but any way it is sliced, diced, and served up, it still amounts to less than half a degree increase in the average global temperature from 1979 to 2010. Forgive me for being skeptical, but I have a great deal more confidence in the Earth God created than to believe that small of a change will have an adverse affect.

The skepticism I feel towards global warming and climate change leads me to another kind of skepticism. What motives lie behind the pushing of this report from IPCC. John Kerry has already jumped on board with the UN, calling it a “wake-up call about global economic opportunity.” He seems to hold the opinion that there are great economic opportunities just around the corner, if only the world will embrace the recommended changes.

The Hill – “So many of the technologies that will help us fight climate change are far cheaper, more readily available, and better performing than they were when the last IPCC assessment was released less than a decade ago,” Kerry said. “Good energy solutions are climate solutions and this report shines a light on energy technologies available right now to substantially reduce global emissions.

“These technologies can cut carbon pollution while growing economic opportunity at the same time. The global energy market represents a $6 trillion opportunity, with 6 billion users around the world. By 2035, investment in the energy sector is expected to reach nearly $17 trillion,” Kerry said.

Well, there you have it. It’s all about global economic opportunity and the technologies that exist to reduce global emissions. Maybe they will figure out how to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, as the IPCC report suggests. I can’t help but wonder if it will fare as well economically as did Solyndra.
