Protests and rallies are becoming a common occurrence in Detroit where thousands of residents have had their water supply cut off by the city because of unpaid bills. Now, welfare groups in the city have applied to the UN for help.

“We are surrounded by the Great Lakes, we’ve got the freshest water on earth and we can’t get water? Really?!”

The advocacy group the Detroit Water Brigade says 300,000 residents are at risk of having their water shut off this summer.

Maureen Taylor is with the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization, one of the group’s that appealed to the UN. She says her group has a solution to the water crisis, but that city officials are standing in the way of progress.

It’s estimated that up to half of the city’s residents can’t pay for their water. Poverty is a major issue in Detroit where the unemployment rate is approximately 40%.
