Consider This Your Trigger Warning

TRIGGER WARNING: For those that may not be aware, a “trigger warning” is basically a heads up to a movie, video, essay or blog post that contains words, images or sounds that may in some way be offensive to the reader.

What I’m about to say here may or not be offensive to you. But, at least you have been warned.

Earlier this week, I was at Starbucks working on my laptop. I was minding my own business and had just finished a great workout, so I was definitely in positive spirits. Unfortunately, my positive attitude was short lived. I overheard 4 guys sitting in the middle of the floor discussing various issues of politics. To be honest, I’m not one to get heavily involved in political debates. But these guys kept dropping buzz words that eventually peaked my attention. I heard one of them say, “Yeah the police just need bigger and better guns. You don’t know what these people are packing or what their motives are. They should have shot him.” They all snickered as another one of the men said, “That’s why I don’t watch CNN now. They’re just trying to skew the facts for those people”. He went on to say, “Man, he just deserved to be shot”. At this point, I looked up at one of the men in the circle and we made eye contact for a moment. Let’s just say if looks burned, I blazed a hole right through his eyes.

As I started reminding myself of the fact that everyone has the right to their own opinion, I couldn’t shake one simple fact. How can anyone, no matter the circumstance, be so heartless about another human being’s life? And furthermore, who could be so heartless about someone who was senselessly and brutally murdered? I purposely will not mention what or who specifically they were talking about. At the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter what the source of the headline was that they were discussing. As I said earlier, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but certain jackass opinions (yep, I said it) should be left at home or behind closed doors – not in public.
