Putin vows to defend Russia s interests after overseas asset freeze
The move came after Russia’s assets were frozen over legal claims from former Yukos oil company shareholders. An international arbitration court at The Hague awarded claimants a record fifty billion dollars. It said Russian officials manipulated the legal system to bankrupt Yukos. Relations between Russia and the European Union sank to a low over the conflict in Ukraine. Europeans accuse Moscow of supporting pro-Russian militias in eastern Ukraine. A claim which Russia has repeatedly denied.
