Mystery Behind MH370 Getting Even Stranger, New Evidence (Videos)

(N.Morgan) In a breaking development in the missing MH370 airplane mystery, it is now believed parts of the wing have been found in the Indian ocean, in the area of Madagascar

Malaysian Authorities are almost certain the parts found indeed came from the Lost MH370 flight.

Malaysia is “almost certain” that plane debris found on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean is from a Boeing 777, the deputy transport minister said on Thursday, heightening the possibility it could be wreckage from missing Flight MH370.

The object, which is believed be to be part of a wing, was being sent to offices of France’s BEA crash investigation agency in Toulouse to verify if was indeed the first trace of the lost plane to be found, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said.

Malaysia Airlines was operating a Boeing 777 on the ill-fated flight, which vanished in March last year while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in one of the most baffling mysteries in aviation history.

The plane was carrying 239 passengers and crew.

Search efforts led by Australia have focused on a broad expanse of the southern Indian Ocean off Australia.

Reunion Island, where the debris was found washed up on Wednesday, is a French overseas department roughly 3,700 km (2,300 miles) away, east of Madagascar.

“The location is consistent with the drift analysis provided to the Malaysian investigation team, which showed a route from the southern Indian Ocean to Africa,” Najib said in a statement.

I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that   If it’s really from that airplane, it is way far from where it was last spotted, near the southern tip of Vietnam—roughly 3,800 miles away.

Which means it’s also way far from where the search for the plane has been concentrated.

The Volume of Space Below Eight Miles

The surface area of a sphere with radius r is A=4πr^2.

The radius of the earth is about 4,000 miles, so its surface area is approximately 200,000,000 square miles.

Thus the volume of space below eight miles is this number multiplied by eight — about one and one-half billion cubic miles.

If an aircraft had an infinite amount of fuel, it could fly around undetected for a very long time.

Even given that radar covers most land areas, a plane continuing to fly over oceans would have a billion cubic miles in which to disappear.

The arrow on the right shows the approximate last known position of MH370, the one near Madagascar shows Réunion Island, where the wreckage was found.  GOOGLE MAPS
