The victories obtained by non-establishment candidates in the New Hampshire primary Tuesday caused shockwaves to rattle the cores of both the Republican and Democratic parties in the United States. The results were even more shocking in the Democratic side, where Hillary’s attack dogs have come out to bite her opponent, Bernie Sanders. The Hillary crowd has gone so far as to say that, despite losing by more than 20 points, Hillary was indeed the winner of the primaries. On Thursday night, just two days after the primary, it was Clinton’s turn to attempt to whack Sanders for what she says are policies that do not add up. Clinton is right. Sanders’ proposals have no feet or head. They will increase the size of government to levels never seen before and it will certainly mean the end of the already shrinking middle class. What Clinton did not say during the debate held in Milwaukee last night, is that she is the mother of many of the policies that Sanders has now adopted and taken to the extreme left in order to gain more popular support. At the start, the moderator asked Sanders he estimated that the implementation of his programs could increase the volume of the federal government if he were elected president, following his response, Clinton intervened without being offered the word. “Based on the proposals of Senator Sanders, the size of the federal government would increase by 40%. All progressive economists who have spoken on its program of universal free healthcare wrote that the numbers do not add up,” said Clinton. The former Secretary of State criticized the plans of his opponent but forgot to tell the audience that she was a proponent and supporter of free universal healthcare even before Sanders threw his support behind the idea. There lies Clinton’s hypocrisy. This initial episode set the tone for what was the rest of the debate, more warlike than the others, as Clinton insisted on many occasions that the American people “need to know specifically” how the proposals would work if the self-proclaimed democratic socialist senator were elected president. “Having been in the trenches fighting for this (health coverage), allows me to say that we are not England and we are not France. I was very specific with my proposals saying how much they would cost,” said the former first lady. Sanders responded to attacks by Clinton and the fact that she repeated several times the phrase “When I’m president”. In one ocassion, Sanders said: “Hillary, you’re still not at the White House.” One of the issues on which both candidates clashed over was in immigration policy, which will be key in the coming weeks as the next election stop for Democrats is Nevada, a state with a high percentage of Latino and immigrant population. “I voted in favor of comprehensive immigration reform when I was in the Senate; Senator Sanders voted against,” said Hillary, who was elected Senator by the state of New York. Sanders refreshed Hillary’s head by saying that large Latino organizations also opposed the reform because it did not guarantee the working conditions of immigrants and could lead to cases of exploitation. He then called for the legalization of the 11 million undocumented immigrants who are estimated to live in USA. Real numbers show that the total is more like 40 million illegal immigrants. Sanders insisted in his criticism of the immigration policies of President Barack Obama, especially with the deportation of immigrants carried out earlier this year. Many liberal and progressive movements are furious at Obama for deporting a few illegals in comparison to the Bush administration. In the case of Obama, most of the people that have been deported are recognized criminals. By no means does this indicate that Obama has done a great job in illegal immigration. In fact, last year, Obama allowed the entrance of tens of thousands of illegals from Central and South America every month. “When we see people fleeing from Honduras and countries with many problems of violence in Central America, I do not think we should send them back,” said Sanders, to which Clinton responded that “we must send the message to families in Central America that they must not send their children to this dangerous trip.” Sanders replied immediately by saying that “I do not know who you’re sending a message to. These are children who are fleeing war, “he said. The debate, held in Milwaukee, which was organized by the public television PBS, also brought up the question of the financing of political campaigns, and Clinton immediately tried to distance herself from the political action groups (SuperPACS) formed by big donors and that give support to establishment candidates like her, Bush, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. “I can not answer for them,” she said, to immediately deny that they may have some political influence if she reaches the presidency. “Let’s not insult the intelligence of the people. Why would Wall Street, pharmaceutical companies and oil companies spend millions of dollars on campaigns? Just for fun?,” said Sanders. The Vermont Senator is also a beneficiary of SuperPAC money, but at a level that is minuscule when compared to Clinton’s. According to the Center for Public Integrity, Clinton is the largest recipient of SuperPAC money with $163 million, while on the Republican party, Jeb Bush has collected $150 million. Clinton also attacked Sanders for his criticism of Barack […]
