The "Bathroom Law" of North Carolina

The “Bathroom Law” as it has become to be called in North Carolina has caused a lot of controversy.  This rule has caused such a stir that even from as far away as the State of California has made a decree that no unnecessary trips can be made to North Carolina.  According to The Advocate:

“Mayors of San Francisco, Seattle, and New York City have all said travel to the Tar Heel State is temporarily suspended.”

I guess a city’s got to do what a city’s got to do. I think that is what makes this country a great place to live. Each state gets the right to make it’s own laws according to what the people of that state want. That right was taken away from Georgia. The people of Georgia voted to have a law put into place that would make it illegal for people of the opposite gender to go into a bathroom marked specifically for a certain gender.

From CNN online this statement was made by House Speaker Dennis Ralston:

House Speaker Dennis Ralston, a Republican, called the bill “a good faith compromise” that included “clear anti-discriminatory language.”

“It is regrettable that the merits of this measure have been ignored in the days since its passage by critics who had not taken the time to read the bill or understand the legal issues involved,” he said.

There were many businesses and companies that opposed the bill but they did not bother to even read it. Timothy Head told CNN that “This bill protected pastors, churches, and faith-based organizations from being forced to violate their religious beliefs.” Head is the executive director of the Faith and Freedom Coalition.

Ultimately it came down to not what the people of the state wanted but what the handful of business wanted. The governor was more concerned with is state losing some businesses instead of allowing the people of the state to gain laws they wanted.

Other states have also been thinking of creating a similar law: Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee and Wisconsin. The way that our country was created is that each state gets to decide for itself how to govern the people of that state. It is essentially bullying when one group says I don’t like how your mom dressed you today so I am not going to play with you on the swings. Thank you North Carolina for not giving into the bullies.
