NATO is the military arm of the West. Many of their imperialistic aspirations are strengthened and defended via a permanent open war policy with NATO as the executioner of that policy. This reality won’t change in the near future, unless the organization is dissolved or rebuilt. Lately, Donald Trump’s statements on NATO’s utility to the world and more specifically, to the US, has triggered all the alarms. Trump has said several times that under his administration the United States will revise all globalist treaties, renegotiate some and reject the rest. Trump’s campaign slogan cannot be clearer: “America First”. It has been one of the highlights of his speeches, along with “Make America Great Again”. No presidential candidate in the last few elections has been more direct than Trump about what he plans to do to attempt to revive a country that has been in a permanent coma for decades. First, the magnate says, the government must take care of the US before worrying about the rest of the world. Trump pointed his intention to dedicate most of his time and efforts to do that during an interview with The New York Times where he has put into question whether he would defend NATO members in an attack. Trump questioned whether he would automatically extend security guarantees to NATO members if he becomes the president of the United States. When the reporter asked about threats from Russia to the Baltic States, the Republican candidate questioned the immediate defense: “If Russia attacks them, first we check to see if these nations have fulfilled their obligations with us before going to their aid.” The business tycoon emphasized his nationalist approach. He also assured the reporter that NATO allies will need to split defense costs that the US has endured for decades and would be responsible for redefining what it means to be a partner of US.. “I’d rather be able to continue with existing agreements, but only if the allies stop taking advantage of an era of American generosity that is no longer affordable,” he said. In the same way, Trump acknowledged that his approach to dealing with allies and enemies of the US is radically different from what has been seen before in the Republican Party. Trump said that most Republican candidates, since the end of World War II, wanted to focus on the internationalist role of the country to become “the indispensable nation,” something like the guardian of peace. “We are spending a fortune on military matters, some 800 billion dollars, and that does not sound very smart to me.” The idea of Trump, whose followers have cheered every single time, is that the US must fix the internal disorder before getting involved with international problems. “How will I help others when you have people are shooting at policemen in cold blood?”, he explained.
