Sen. Marco Rubio Remarks On His Ambitions For 2020
I’m going to put a marker on this one, in order to check back in four years.
Senator Marco Rubio, on the verge of winning reelection to his Florida senate seat in November, is trying to put a lid on any talk of ambitions beyond his duties in the Senate.
“Not only am I going to serve for six years — I’ve been honest with people [about] the things I want to achieve. Some may take longer than six years to achieve. And so that’s what my focus is on, 100 percent,” Rubio said in an interview with Newsradio 970 WFLA.
In other words, Marco Rubio is claiming no designs on another run for the presidency in 2020.
“If I wanted to run for something else, I wouldn’t have run for Senate,” Rubio said in his radio interview Wednesday. “My opponent keeps saying I’m going run for president. If I wanted to run for president in four years, I would have just stayed out of this race and started running on November the 9, which a lot of other people are going to do.
“I wouldn’t have run for re-election at the last minute in the toughest swing state in the country in a year as uncertain as this one,” he added.
Senator Rubio dropped out of the running this year, in what was a combative primary, due to Donald Trump and the abrasive rhetoric that he stirred up early.
After losing his home state of Florida, Rubio stepped aside, and had initially claimed that he wouldn’t be running for reelection to the Senate.
The prevailing thought, regarding his change of mind is that he would be needed in the Senate if the cancer of Trumpism caused massive losses to the down ballot.
For now, we can take his word for it, as it seems he’ll be busy with his senatorial duties for the next four years.
