In A Fit Of Pique, Democrats Delay Senate Panel Vote On SCOTUS Nominee Gorsuch
Senate Democrats have vowed to make it difficult to get Neil Gorsuch confirmed. This is nothing but petty revenge on their part, as most are still miffed that Republicans would not allow for hearings on former President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland.
Pouting and dragging their feet, now that the election is over seems to be the way they intend to go about doing the business of confirmation.
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the chairman of the committee, said Democrats had requested that the committee’s vote on Gorsuch be punted to next week.
“I understand that the minority would like to hold [him] over,” Grassley said during the Judiciary Committee’s meeting on Monday.
Under committee rules any one member can request that a nomination be held the first time it appears on the agenda.
The likely vote will be April 3, 2017.
Senate goes into recess at the end of that week, so if Democrats continue to Democrat, it could cause an even further delay.
Democrats are demanding a 60-vote threshold for Gorsuch’s approval, but it is unclear whether the party has enough votes to support a filibuster against Trump’s nominee.
Republicans have suggested they will change the Senate’s rules allowing a filibuster for Supreme Court nominees if Democrats block Gorsuch.
Nuclear.
The nominee for deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, is forced to sit and wait another week, as well.
One can hope that this is the last of delay tactics by Democrats and they put aside their partisan butt-hurt long enough to get things moving, again.
