Only respite home closed through cost cutting measures.

 In what can only be described as a cruel and vindictive move by the NHS and Cornwall Council, funding for the safe haven of Sanctuary House, also known as Oakleigh House has been stopped as the money can be better used elsewhere. This is the only centre of its kind in Cornwall and no alternative has been put foward meaning Cornwall will have place of this kind. The centre has saved thousands of hours of hospital time and saved hundreds of lives for what is a pittance of money. The cost of clearing away flytipping in Cornwall amounted to £400,000. The next alternative is Bodmin mental hospital which is only usually seen as a last resort. Now its the only resort. This on top of proposed higher taxes and councillors awarding themselves a payrise, having little interaction with the real world.

So when the issue of suicide and mental health are brought up, I think it has to be asked if Cornwall Council and the NHS agree with the non-treatment of mentally ill people in Cornwall and whether they support ones decision to suicide. In cases we have no treatment available for these people, when in past years treatment services were there. Its not that services can’t be there, they can be, its through choice they’re not. Funding is there, considering Cornwall Council’s recent decision to take out a loan of £600m and the £700,000 which Cornwall Council has taken out in gagging orders over the past 2 years. Which raises a very important question- where’s this leading Cornwall and the UK?
