How Democrats Hijacked “Earth Day” from Conservative Founder

This is the 49th anniversary of Earth Week. In remembrance of Earth Day founder and peace activist, John McConnell, here’s a proposed tweet that would be a great way for President Trump to honor Mr. McConnell and the original Earth Day.

On this first day of spring, I honor John McConnell, the conservative Christian founder of the original Earth Day, celebrated by the United Nations on the vernal equinox every year. He was a man of peace, hope and caring for the planet.

As an evangelical Christian, John McConnell was both courageous and visionary in his mission to increase peace and hope in the world. His inspiring biography, Star of Hope – The Life and Times of John McConnell, Founder of Earth Day is “Dedicated to Earth Trustees Everywhere”. It’s author, Robert M. Weir, shares the humble yet illustrious highlights of Mr. McConnell’s legendary commitment to unity and peace among all humans, and responsible stewardship of Earth.

Obviously, he was not the only person thinking of the environment. However, he did coin the phrase “Earth Day” to be celebrated on the vernal equinox each year, the first of which was March 21, 1970. That day and surrounding week inspired successful events around the U.S. and world. Then his phrase was plagiarized by the April 22, 1970 “Environmental Teach-In” organizers, led by Democratic Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. That event was designed to protest pollution, following in the footsteps of anti-Vietnam protests.

Mr. McConnell did not want to restrict or lower his vision to that level. He had a much grander purpose of global unity, peace and celebration of life and Earth that would appeal across all nationalities and religions around the world. Mr. McConnell had legal grounds to sue Senator Nelson and his group, but that was not his way of doing things. He was not confrontational. His lovely wife, Anna, was a kindred spirit and they were an extraordinary team.

After initially coming up with the phrase “Earth Day” in 1968, he prayed to God for the right day to hold a global celebration. The answer came back that the vernal equinox was the right day. He then took a scientific approach and researched the significance of the vernal equinox around the world. He clearly understood why the first day of spring would most unify humanity to celebrate Earth. In 2019, March 20 is the first day of spring in the U.S.

John McConnell kindly endorsed my candidacy for Mayor of Denver in 2011. He autographed his book to me by writing, “Let’s create peace together”. I attended his memorial service in 2012 at the same church in Denver that my family had first attended after we moved from Kansas to Colorado when I was five years-old. I had not been there in over 50 years.

Mr. McConnell was a unique visionary for peace, unity and care for the planet. He served his mission on Earth well. Regardless of your political or religious orientation, his story will move you in quantum leaps upward. He was born on March 22. This really should be “John McConnell Week”, and he deserves our greatest appreciation and the highest honors of our government.
