Video: Meghan McCain Grills Amy Klobuchar on Northam, Late Term Abortions, and the Senator Dodges the Question

An important story that fell off the radar after a couple of weeks in February was Va. Gov. Ralph Northam’s (D) disturbing comments on late term abortions, made in the aftermath of the uproar over a radical pro-abortion bill introduced by Va. House Delegate Kathy Tran (D).

To recap, here’s what Northam said at the time (bolded emphasis added):

When we talk about third trimester abortions, these are done with the consent of the mother, with the consent of the physician. More than one physician, by the way. And its done in case where there may be severe deformities, where there may be a fetus that is non-viable.

So, in this particular example, if a mother is in labor I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.

The mainstream media has consistently lied in their coverage of Northam’s remarks by saying he was taken out of context (he wasn’t).

Unlike with Republicans – who are endlessly hounded with requests for statements and denunciations in the event another Republican takes a controversial position, the mainstream media didn’t do much in the way of asking Democrats if they agreed with what Northam said.

Today on “The View”, Meghan McCain did.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), who is running for president, sat down to talk with the co-hosts of “The View” on a variety of issues. Abortion, as it usually is with the mostly liberal panel, was a hot topic of conversation. But when McCain had the opportunity, she pressed the Senator on Northam’s comments:

“Democrats look like they’ve gotten very extreme on this issue and I think it’s gone from the party of ‘safe, legal, and rare’ to ‘having a conversation about late-term abortions up until birth with the Ralph Northam controversy,” McCain said. “Are you for what he said or late-term abortion or the moments that he was talking about where he would keep a woman ‘comfortable’ as she was giving birth in case she wanted to abort her third-term child?”

“I don’t know all his comments, but what I do know is that I am for a woman having the right to make the choice about her own body,” Klobuchar responded.

“But you’re for late-term abortion,” McCain said, trying to clarify.

“That’s not what we’re talking about here,” Klobuchar replied.

“I don’t think it should be that hard to say, ‘I’m not for late-term abortion in the third-term,’” McCain added, after suggesting that Klobuchar dodged her question. “I don’t think it should be that controversial to say.”

“I think that your argument has been debunked actually,” co-host Sunny Hostin chimed in.

“It has not, it has not.” McCain sternly responded.”It has not been debunked.”

Newsbusters notes that Joy Behar, predictably, rushed to defend Klobuchar, because apparently she can’t speak for herself:

[Klobuchar’s] pat answer of course got applause from the audience. McCain kept pressing. “But the conversation is about, you’re in favor of late-term abortion. Third term abortion?” she asked but was interrupted by an irritated Joy Behar.

“Can I just say something” she said putting up her hand as if to tell McCain to stop. “Meghan, that is so rare!” she gushed, adding that it was only done to save the life of the mother. But even pro-abortion sources dispute this common misconception. Beyond that, the Alabama law has an exception for the life of the mother.

“It’s based on a lie, it’s not true,” Behar repeated a few times.

Sorry, but I’m not buying Klobuchar’s claim that she doesn’t know Northam’s full comments on this issue. You had to have been hiding under a rock in late January/early February to miss them. And she should still be able to give her opinion on late term abortions, regardless of whether or not she really doesn’t know what he said in full.

It’s super-sweet of Behar and Hostin to step in as human shields to keep the Senator from having to give a direct response on this issue, but Klobuchar’s refusal to do so speaks volumes about her – and not in a good way.
