In Hilarious Video, a Dad Models Short Shorts Identical to Those His Teen Daughter Owns, Teaching a Valuable Lesson

Jason Hilley had one thing in mind when he strolled into his teenage daughter’s room last week wearing a pair of short denim shorts: get her to see that wearing her own pair of short shorts wasn’t such a good idea.

Fox News writes about the video Hilley posted to Facebook just a few days before Father’s Day that has now gone viral:

One man has been crowned the dad of the year for pranking his teenaged daughter with a hilarious “Parenting 101” fashion lesson, poking fun at the girl’s penchant for denim cutoffs by surprising her with a pair of his own short shorts.

“You wear yours out in public? I will wear mine! Parenting 101!” funny dad Jason Hilley captioned a must-see home video, shared to Facebook on June 12. In the hysterical 75-second clip, which has since been viewed 24 million times, Hilley and his young son burst into the girl’s room for an impromptu schooling.

“Kendall, we have to have a talk,” the father begins, as a mortified Kendall raises a hand to her mouth and the little boy cackles in delight.

“Get your shorts, we’re gonna see whose fit better,” Hilley continues of the “butt cutting shorts.”

“Which ones?” she asks, which her dad describes as “the new ones we bought that were supposed to be a lot longer.”

He even joked with his daughter that if she didn’t get the shorts out and put them on for comparison, he’d wear his own to pick her up at school every day.

In an interview with TODAY Parents, Hilley said using humor when in the midst of teachable moments with your kids is sometimes the best route to take:

“We joke around a lot, but Kendall knows when my jokes are serious,” Jason explained to TODAY Parents. “Kids will be kids and try to push the limits. That’s when I step in and try to correct the behavior with a little bit of humor. You don’t have to yell and scream and punish to get a point across.”

People have been praising Jason for his creativity in the comments. “I’m stealing this idea for when my daughter is older,” wrote one. Added another: “This is EPIC. What a good dad.”

According to Jason, Kendall and her brother, Walker, 8, don’t embarrass easily. “Kendall is a cheerleader and asks me to do routines with her in out front yard,” Jason told TODAY Parents. “It’s quite a sight.”

Hilley is not the first dad who has gotten the media’s attention for wearing “Daisy Duke” shorts as a creative way to teach his teenage daughter a lesson. In 2013, one Utah dad tried a similar tactic with his own daughter, who said he definitely got his point across. Scott McIntosh told ABC‘s Good Morning America he hoped his daughter learned from the experience that “modest is hottest.”
