Italy's Matteo Salvini Goes for Broke

Italy’s flamboyant Deputy PM Matteo Salvini has torpedoed his government. Italy’s dog’s breakfast of a coalition has proved unworkable. By throwing his weight behind a general election, Salvini, whose fan base reaches around the world, is now positioning himself to become Italy’s next prime minister.

The political elite in Brussels are horrified at the development. If Salvini achieves his aim, it could signal the end of wholesale European Union corruption, political unaccountability, and an end to Third World immigration. There is much at stake.

Salvini hopes for a big win in an early election, but it is not quite in the bag. The globalist coalition will stop at nothing, including assassination or suiciding the most popular political leader in Europe.

The decision was widely expected since otherwise, the government would have faced a vote of no confidence, in which Salvini’s street-populist, anti-migrant League party would have anyway voted to scrap the government.

Salvini had earlier called for a snap election, declaring that the coalition between his party and the left-wing Five-Star Movement was no longer viable. “The choice of Prime Minister should be given back to the voters.”

The left-right coalition was formed in June 2018 and resolved a hung parliament crisis. Since then, Salvini has clashed on policy numerous times with leftist Five-Star leader and fellow Deputy PM Luigi Di Maio.

“Italy has a long history of short governments,” Federiga Bindi, professor of political science at Tor Vergata University, said. “At some point, we will say that a government that lasted a year and a half lasted long.”

Recent polls indicate that if a general election was held now, the League party would take about 38 percent of the vote, which goes some way toward explaining why Salvini is in favour of a snap election.  

If the charismatic champion of the working class succeeds, he will be able to form a people’s government in an alliance with like-minded political forces like Forza Italia of Silvio Berlusconi and Brothers of Italy.

Meantime, the broad left is putting their heads together in an attempt to form an anti-League force capable of averting a fresh election.
