Democrats Announce Three New Gun Control Bills and President Trump Seems Poised To Cave

In a party line vote, the House Judiciary Committee under Fat Jerry Nadler has passed three new gun control bills.

H.R. 1236, the “Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2019”: This bill would provide grants to help state, tribal and local efforts to remove firearms from individuals determined to be a danger to themselves or others. Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) laws are more commonly known as “red flag” laws.

H.R. 1186, the “Keep Americans Safe Act”: This bill would regulate large capacity ammunition feeding devices, such as a magazine or belt, making it illegal to import, sell, manufacture or possess such devices.

H.R. 2708, the “Disarm Hate Act”: This bill would prevent a person convicted of a misdemeanor hate crime from obtaining a firearm.

There are undoubtedly more on the way because the perennial favorite, Universal Background Checks, is not on the list.

These are all bad-to-horrible ideas that can only be rationalized if one realizes that their true purpose is to limit firearms ownership to law enforcement and members of the personal security detail of select Democrat politicians and progressive entertainers.

I’ve touched on the so-called red flag laws before.(see The ‘Do Something’ Impulse Is About to Make Congress Do Something Stupid and Evil on Gun Control). Just like the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, so, too, is the road to being disarmed. As these laws are passed, it is inevitable that the range of people entitled to invoke the seizure of weapons will increase to just about anyone because there will always be the fear that some rando on Twitter saw a warning sign missed by family members. And we’re already seeing that getting the flags lifted are nearly impossible because no judge wants to be the guy who lifts a red flag order and then the guy goes out and gets a gun and kills someone. Plus, as the shooting in Odessa-Midland showed, even if you are barred from having a firearm you can still get one.

The ban on high capacity magazines is going to result in a lot of gun owners being convicted of possessing them illegally and then lose the ability to own any weapon. It should be seen less as a public safety measure than as a way of creating a new criminal class.

The “Disarm Hate” nonsense is nothing more than a way of turning (in my view) offensive and anti-democratic hate crimes statutes into a bludgeon. You can bet that in dark blue jurisdictions you will see a spike in hate crimes charged because that charge brings a ban on firearms ownership.

I don’t think any of these will see the light of day in the Senate but that isn’t the real danger. Apparently, President Trump is close to caving on universal background checks.

Hopefully, people in the White House who care about 2020 will impress upon Trump that the people he’s trying to win over here hate him and will never voter for him and the people he’s thinking about screwing won’t show up in November 2020 if he follows through on this.
