Iranian Director-General of Communicable Diseases at Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention Mohammad Mehdi Gouya said that none of the coronavirus patients in Iran had any contact with people from China or have traveled to or came from China, in a statement to a local news network in Tehran on Thursday. Gouya said that there are “five confirmed cases until today morning,” and added that the tests showed that “four of them are related to the city of Qom and the other one is to the city of Arak.” “Our initial information shows that none of the patients had any contact with any people from China or have traveled to or came from China,” said Gouya who added that “We are assessing and searching for the reason, and we will publish the reason as soon as our information is complete.” After the calls for immediate and pre-emptive measures to counter the virus, the government vowed to follow up anti-coronavirus measures with its full capacity. In the city of Qom, the government shut down the religious schools in the city on Thursday, after the discovery of the contamination cases. State news agency IRNA reported multiple suspected contamination with coronavirus cases in the cities of Babol and Tehran. Reports add that patients are in quarantine and under medical examination.

After two people were pronounced dead as a result of the coronavirus in the Iranian city of Qom on Wednesday, citizens of Tehran on Thursday expressed their concerns over the spread of the virus in Iran. I am worried that it turns into an epidemic,” said a Tehran resident. Another resident said that what is important is to provide people with “the right information” and to exercise “no censorship” related to the disease. Due to the news on the spread of the virus, the prices of face masks and anti-bacterial gel, used to maintain hygiene and to counter the virus, “have gone up” according to a doctor, Pour Esmaeil. One resident considered this to be “unfair” while another said that the government should provide them “for free.” At a time when the Speaker of the parliament Ali Larijani emphasised the importance of taking immediate and pre-emptive measures to counter the virus, the speaker of the government Ali Rabiei said that Tehran would follow up anti-coronavirus measures using its full capacity. After the discovery of the contamination cases in Qom, the government reportedly shut down schools in the city on Thursday. Three additional cases but no fatalities have since been announced in Iran, by authorities in that country. The coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year.
