Iran: Rouhani says “enemies” are plotting to fuel fears over coronavirus

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Iran’s “enemies” were planning to shut the country down by creating fears about the novel coronavirus, during meeting of the National Headquarters for Disease Control in Tehran on Tuesday.

“This is one of our enemies’ plots that want to impose too much fear within the society, leading the country towards a shutdown,” Rouhani said.

“Everything will be normal in the country come Saturday, unless a specific case or a specific situation will be announced by the National Headquarters [for Disease Control]. So everyone should obey the headquarters.”

Iran’s government shut down schools and cinemas in attempt to tackle the spread of the novel virus. On Tuesday, authorities announced that the country’s deputy health minister, Iraj Harirchi, tested positive for the disease.
