Turkish and Iranian FMs to work together to bring peace to Syria

The Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said it was time bring “lasting stability and peace to Syria” on Monday, as he held a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, in Istanbul.

While speaking about the instability in the region and the problems facing terrorism, Cavusoglu pointed out the situation in Syria. He said the constitutional commission is expected to convene in August, and “must be successful.”

Cavusoglu also highlighted the problems in the region regarding Yemen and Libya.

“We will continue this struggle to the end, both under the umbrella of the Islamic cooperation organisation and on other international platforms, including other international organisations, and with the international community, but as Iran and Turkey,” he added.

Both foreign ministers abided to “fight” against the Israeli government, which he accused of having “a plan and a decision to invade Palestinian territory.”

Both parties agreed that the Astana summit, which will also be attended by Russia, should be held via video call as soon as possible in order to help the peace effort in Syria. Cavusoglu and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov were due to discuss Syria and Libya on Sunday, but the discussion was reportedly postponed.
