Libya: Turkish FM Cavusoglu ​and Maltese counterpart Bartolo meet with GNA leader Sarraj in Tripoli

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and his Maltese counterpart Evarist Bartolo met with the leader of Libya’s internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Sarraj, in Tripoli on Thursday.

GNA and Turkish-backed forces are currently advancing on the coastal town and oil terminus of Sirte, which is held by the forces of General Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA)​, with the Egyptian parliament last month approving the deployment of troops in the region. The Egyptian government backs the LNA and warned earlier in June that intercede if Sirte was attacked.

Turkey has increased its military involvement in Libya in recent months as the GNA has experience increased success against LNA forces, who have been largely pushed out of the northwest of the country.

Libya has been torn by conflict since the ousting of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. More recently the country has been split into areas controlled by the GNA in Tripoli and the northwest, and territories held by the eastern-based LNA in Benghazi, led by Haftar.
