Trump Repeats Challenge to Biden to Submit to Drug Test Before Debate
On Tuesday, President Trump repeated his challenge to Democratic rival Joe Biden to take a drug test before the presidential debates. Repeating a call he first made last week, Trump accused Biden of “being on some kind of enhancement,” though he provided no evidence for the allegation.
“He’s on some kind of an enhancement in my opinion,” Trump told Laura Ingraham on Fox News. “And I say we should both — I should take a drug test, so should he. Because we don’t want to have a situation where a guy is taking some kind of…”
“It’s like athletes?” Ingraham interrupted, trying to clarify the President’s stream-of-conscious musings.
“No. No,” Trump continued. “I want to take one. I’ll take one, he’ll take one. We should both take a drug test.”
Coherent Competition
Trump’s unfounded theory is part of a longer narrative he has attempted to weave about Biden’s mental fitness. But the argument that Biden, who is nearly 78, is somehow losing his intellectual capacity is frequently undercut by Trump’s own behavior. At 74, Trump will be the oldest man ever elected to a second presidential term, making this year’s Democratic and Republican matchup the oldest in American history.
Still, Trump has suggested that Biden’s debate performance inexplicably improved before the final debate of the primary election, which involved Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders. The President observed that Biden’s speech and coherence improved from the previous 10 debates, and wondered aloud whether it was the result of some kind of drug use. (No mind that it was the only debate to include only two candidates, as opposed to the packed-house debates from earlier in the season).
But making claims that an opponent must be on drugs if they can speak in full sentences is not a new refrain from Trump. In 2016, he made the same accusation about then-adversary Hillary Clinton, and demanded that she take a drug test before their debates.
But like the Clinton campaign did four years ago, the Biden campaign refuses to entertain the challenge.
