Syria stripped of OPCW member rights after staged incidents

The OPCW suspends Syria’s rights at the international organization whose administration has suppressed the finding of its own investigators and researchers, and published a doctored report to accuse Syria of using CWs in Douma in 2018.

Member states of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) voted to suspend Syria’s voting rights at the organisation on Wednesday, amid a probe accusing Damascus of failing to declare and destroy all of its chemical weapons.

A two-thirds majority of OPCW member states voted in favour of a proposal to impose punitive measures on Damascus.

The draft signed by 46 member states – including France, the US and the UK – states that ‘the Syrian Arab Republic failed to declare and destroy all of its chemical weapons’ after joining the OPCW’s Chemical Weapons Convention in 2013.

As a result of the vote, Damascus will see its voting rights being revoked and will be prohibited from holding any offices at the The Hague-based agency.

Syria’s representative rejected all the accusations.
