Iran’s Nuclear Program Is ‘Galloping Forward,’ Blinken Warns

Presidential candidate Alireza Zakani sets out key goals if elected

Iranian parliament lawmaker and presidential candidate Alireza Zakani spoke at length during a press conference on Wednesday about his plans if he were elected as president.

Advocating for a new framework in relations with the West, Zakani also reaffirmed his desire to continue strengthening relations with China and Russia.

“We are going for a new approach in which attention to the newly empowered eastern countries is a basic principle that will be stabilised by long-term agreements, especially with China and Russia, and also for the western countries we are looking for a redefinition of our interactions with Europe, which is about mutual respect and national profits of the Islamic Republic of Iran that from our point of view should be considered and this mutual interaction and logical relation must prepare a foundation that provides a new framework for our relations with Europe,” he said.

Zakani also discussed relations with the US, highlighting negotiations for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“The US can only get back to the JCPOA when it stops imposing oppressive sanctions and economic evils. If the US avoids implementing its oppressive sanctions and eliminates the sanctions and we can have a legal guarantee for it and then we can verify it, it would be of no problem that the US gets back in the JCPOA. And then we can follow this path. But the Americans would like to both keep the sanctions, as well as its framework and infrastructure, and bring up new issues for negotiations. And both of them are red lines for us,” said Zakani.

Zakani is one of seven candidates vying to become the Iran’s next president. Elections take place on June 18.
