At NewsGuard, we believe that the problem of online misinformation is best addressed not by artificial intelligence, but by human intelligence. We use journalism to rate and review thousands of news and information sites—from major media brands to niche blogs to hoax sites that spread falsehoods to generate ad clicks—using nine journalistic criteria and a rigorous, transparent process. By creating a standard for understanding the credibility of news sources online, we aim to restore trust and accountability to journalism.

We look for candidates who…

• Bring reporting experience. If you want to join the NewsGuard team, be ready to demonstrate that you have the skill and experience to interview sources, conduct research, find primary-source documents, communicate professionally, and avoid bias.
• Call for comment. NewsGuard’s rating process goes beyond just reading and researching sites online. Journalists at NewsGuard know how to be persistent and even dogged, calling sources for comment multiple times if needed. This journalistic approach keeps our ratings as fair and accurate as possible and often results in publishers making improvements to their credibility or transparency practices.
• Strive for fairness. Rating and reviewing news and information sites means encountering a wide range of topics, worldviews and political perspectives. Candidates seeking to join NewsGuard’s team must be committed to treating every site fairly, basing its rating on NewsGuard’s nine journalistic criteria and rating system and nothing else.
• Leave politics at the door. At NewsGuard, we seek to keep politics out of the equation and assess each site based on its journalistic practices. This means avoiding both real and perceived bias. As a NewsGuard analyst, you will need to sign a strict ethics and conflict of interests policy and avoid anything that might create even the perception of bias, such as intemperate social media postings or partisan political activities.
• Adapt and learn. NewsGuard is a startup and a frontrunner in the creation of a new industry—the Cyber Trust industry. NewsGuard team members should be adaptable, ready for change, and eager to contribute new ideas for how we can continue to innovate and improve.

The NewsGuard rating of news websites separates sites that are doing reliable journalism from purveyors of false or misleading news or disinformation. Advertisers use the NewsGuard ratings to build a list of reliable news sites safe for advertising and to keep ads off inappropriate sites.

BrandGuard partners include ad agencies like IPG, and advertising technology platforms such as Peer39, Amobee, TripleLift and many more.

BRAND SAFETY

By licensing the NewsGuard ratings, advertisers limit their advertising, including programmatic advertising, to sites that meet the NewsGuard criteria. Advertisers use this data and related information about sites to craft efficient—and safe—ad campaigns.

Ad tech companies have software to keep brands safe from hate speech and pornography. But artificial intelligence cannot root out false news because false news is designed to look like real news. NewsGuard adds an extra layer of protection as the only process that involves human beings—trained journalists—reviewing every website. Learn More

NewsGuard has partnered with more than 750 public libraries globally that recognize news literacy as an essential skill for students and adults alike.

With its ratings and detailed Nutrition Label reviews, NewsGuard is the only resource that provides extensive context about thousands of news and information websites, created by trained analysts assessing basic journalistic criteria of credibility and transparency. Through NewsGuard’s pro-bono News Literacy Programs, libraries can give their patrons access to the media literacy browser extension, totally free.
