Fire at Iraq COVID hospital leaves 92 dead, more than 100 injured

Calls for “salvation government” grow as hundreds rally after Nassiriya Iraq hospital fire

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets on Tuesday to express their anger and frustration with the current government following a fire that ripped through a COVID-19 hospital in Nassiriya the previous day.

Protesters gathered at the town square calling for the government to resign, with some asking for a United Nations intervention.

“We are asking of the United Nations a Salvation Government. This government, we have not seen anything from them, it is one of crime, not reform. We have enough, and this crime that happened at the hospital does not happen anywhere else. So we are asking the United Nations as quickly as possible, please take us away from these crimes. We have had enough.”

At least 92 people died following a fire at the coronavirus ward of a Nassiriya hospital, according to health officials. More than 100 others were also reportedly injured from the blaze that ripped through the hospital on Monday night which, according to an official investigation, happened when sparks from faulty wires made contact with an oxygen tank that then exploded.
