Hamas release first footage of Israel held captive in Gaza

March-April 2022: Soldiers stand by as settlers repeatedly throw stones from Beit Hadassah settlement at Palestinian homes and passersby The settlement of Beit Hadassah is one of eight settlement sites installed by Israel in central Hebron, in the heart of the city’s Palestinian population. Israel enforces a regime of segregation between settlers and Palestinians in the area, which includes severe restrictions on Palestinian movement, brutal violence against them and facilitation of daily settler attacks.

In March and April 2022, B’Tselem documented seven incidents in which settlers threw stones at nearby Palestinian homes or passersby. Three of them were captured in the video footage above. During some of these incidents, Palestinians also threw stones at the settlement. The military keeps up a constant presence in posts erected on the roof of a building adjacent to the settlement, as well as within the settlement. Soldiers staffing the posts enabled these settler attacks, fired tear gas canisters and stun grenades at Palestinians who were throwing stones, and occasionally fired at passersby on the nearby street.

Below is a description of the incidents captured in the footage, followed by testimonies collected by B’Tselem field researcher Manal al-Ja’bari:

On 28 March 2022, Palestinian youths threw stones at a soldier staffing an observation post near Beit Hadassah. The soldier fired three shots, apparently in the air, and a settler who climbed up to the post began throwing stones at the youths.

Nirmin Abu Hayah, a volunteer with B’Tselem’s camera project who lives in a nearby building, filmed the soldier firing what appears to be a rubber-coated metal bullet at the Palestinian youths on the street. He also threw a stun grenade into the street despite the presence of passersby, ignoring the settler who was throwing stones next to him. Several minutes later, three more soldiers climbed up to the post. They spoke to the settler, and he climbed down off the roof. Other soldiers, who went out into the street through the settlement’s gate, chased the youths, who escaped them. About half an hour later, the three soldiers left the roof.
