Options for the AFU in #Bakhmut – Analysis by Military Chronicles⚡️
On 20 and 21 April, reports emerged that Wagner PMC fighters, with fire support by the airborne troops, had approached the O-0506 route between #Bakhmut and Chasov Yar. After this, the position of the AFU in #Bakhmut could deteriorate considerably.
🔹What is this Route and why is it so important?
Route O-0506 connected the western stronghold of the AFU in Chasovy Yar directly to the city. It passes through the village of #Khromovo and was used by the AFU directly from Chasov Yar to the western neighbourhoods of #Bakhmut. Prior to the advancement of the Wagner PMCs inside the city blocks, #Bakhmut could also be reached by another route – via the southwestern route T-0504, bypassing #Krasnoye.
Route O-0506 was the last relatively safe road through which supplies and reinforcements could be brought in and the wounded transported out.
🔹What is happening in #Bakhmut now:
As the “Bandwagon” advanced deeper into #Bakhmut, fire control over the AFU supply routes intensified, with the result that Ukrainian forces began to lose up to 90% of the equipment and people sent to #Bakhmut not only from Chasov Yar, but also from #Konstantinovka, #Druzhkovka, and #Toretsk.
At the moment, the AFU retains control of no more than 10% of the city: Ukrainian troops are in the Novy and Cherema neighbourhoods, School No. 18 and defending from Chernyakhovsky Street in #Khromovo. “Orchestra” crushes the enemy from the north in the area of Metallurgov Boulevard and Roz Alley, in parallel – on the AFU units that are trying to leave the city in small groups in one or two vehicles. FAB-120/250 bombs with planning and correction modules (MPCMs) as well as Krasnopol guided artillery rounds are actively used against targets both in the immediate vicinity of #Artyomovsk and deep in the AFU defence – #Konstantinovka, #Druzhkovka and Chasov Yar. This further complicates and slows down the supply of the group, which cannot hold out without help.
🔹What options do the AFU have?
The first option is to throw reinforcements into the city and either continue defending or cover the retreat. According to preliminary estimates, the AFU’s total losses in killed, wounded, missing and prisoners of war both in and around #Bakhmut, including reinforcements destroyed almost every day, are as high as 650-730 per day.
To hold the city, the AFU is preparing to send the 93rd Mechanized Brigade and the reserve 117th Territorial Defense Brigade, prepared for a counterattack, to #Bakhmut. In the western quarters of the city, these troops should reinforce units of the AFU’s 92nd Mechanized, whose losses are estimated at 65%.
The second option is to retreat on asphalt roads. Most roads between #Bakhmut and neighbouring towns are not only shelled by artillery “banding” and airborne troops, but also severely damaged. Some bridges and crossings cannot be crossed by heavy equipment. This means that on the other side retreating AFU units have to transfer to another vehicle. It is practically impossible to do this safely.
The third option is to retreat through the fields:
It rained almost all last week in #Bakhmut, and rain will continue to fall next week. This will make the fields impassable again. Even tanks, not to mention pickup trucks and other vehicles, will find it difficult to get through them quickly in such conditions. Any AFU equipment that gets stuck will almost instantly come under artillery fire and be disabled, and after that the Ukrainian military will have to overcome the five-kilometre stretch between Chasov Yar and #Bakhmut on foot.
The fourth option is a diversionary flank counterattack:
If the AFU command feels that control over #Bakhmut is finally being lost, 80,000-strong reserves from Ray-Aleksandrovka, #Konstantinovka, #Predtechino, #Nikolayevka and #Dzerzhinsk will probably be brought into the fight.

At the Road west of #Khromovo, there is now very fierce fighting in the wooded area. The enemy is trying to counterattack to push the Wagner PMC forces off the road. Our troops, in turn, are trying to gain a foothold on the road.
Both sides are actively employing artillery fire. They understand the importance of this section, so they make any effort to ensure control over it.
The road itself is still being covered by artillery, mortars and ATGMs. According to various reports, up to 10-12 wheeled and tracked vehicles have been destroyed in the area over the past 24 hours.
The advance of Wagner PMC stormtroopers to the west of the city centre and in the northwestern neighbourhoods of #Artyomovsk (#Bakhmut) is also continuing.

The main battles are now unfolding in the western part of the city. In recent days, attack aircraft of PMC “Wagner” managed to overcome another psychological defensive line of the AFU, which went through Bakhmut by rail. Our units took the railway station and moved on, recapturing high-rise residential buildings, followed by the private sector. At the same time, from the north and south, Artemovsk is blocked by units of Russian paratroopers, who stop the threat of attacks on the city from the flanks.

Despite statements about the formation of the Artemovsky cauldron, it is not yet formally closed – the neck is preserved to the south of the highway through Khromovo – this is a shot through and not yet physically cut road through Krasnoye (it is very problematic to use it) and fields between Krasnoye and Khromovo, which are problematic to move on in mud conditions (at least for wheeled vehicles, and tracked vehicles get stuck there with a bang).

The report mentions that the UKR are not shelling Russian positions very much but this is taken to be in preparation for an attack by conserving artillery ammunition.
A foothold near the AFU on the left bank of the Dnieper – does it exist, and what does it mean?
Last night, reports appeared on the Web that the AFU were able to freely gain a foothold on the left bank of the Dnieper near the settlement of Kindiyka north of Alyoshek.
🔻 Does the bridgehead really exist?
The enemy is indeed carrying out attacks on the left bank using small boats supplied as part of US military assistance.
However, as a rule, the AFU of Ukraine do not go further than the banks of the Dnieper due to problems with the supply, which in the current conditions is possible only with the help of small boats. To move inland, constant replenishment of ammunition and weapons is necessary, which is simply not feasible now.
In practice, the AFU had made attempts to advance further before (https://t.me/rybar/43238) – near Bolshoi Potemkin Island and the settlement of Dnepryan near Novaya Kakhovka. But they all ended in the destruction of the assault squads, cut off from ground logistics. Therefore, the presence of positions on the left bank does not guarantee the success of the AFU in the current realities.
🔻 What could be the problem?
However, a dangerous trend is already visible. If earlier the AFU carried out sorties at night or in conditions of poor visibility, now Ukrainian detachments safely cross the Dnieper from Kherson during the day. This is indicated by recent footage from open sources.

This indicates either the absence of regular fire impact on the enemy, or the demonstrative actions of the AFU, aimed at deliberately drawing the attention of Russian troops to this sector of the front. While this is happening, the enemy has time to either hide or change location.
❗️At the same time, the activity of the AFU right under the noses of Russian fighters may not be accidental: the Ukrainian command is well aware that the advance of a small group across the area under fire is senseless from the point of view of logic.
Specifically, in this case, the actions of the AFU are more like bait and creating the appearance of problems of the Russian Armed Forces in Kherson Region in order to divert attention from the direction (https://t.me/rybar/45940) of the main strike. While we are focusing on the AFU group near Kindiyka, a real attack is being prepared somewhere. For example, on the Kinburn Peninsula.
Similar things happened in the summer and autumn of last year – while all attention was focused on Kherson, Ukrainian formations also struck near Kharkov. It is possible that now the enemy is defiantly concentrating forces where there will either be (https://t.me/rybar/45890) a pinning blow, or it will not happen at all.
Strelkov Regarding the enemy’s alleged bridgehead on the left bank of the Dnieper. The answer is “it is and it is not”. I explain: formally, the Ukrainians have a small bridgehead – they have secured an island of solid land in the river floodplain. They planted a garrison there, supplied it with boats and launches. In fact the use (except for propaganda) of this “springboard” is about zero. Therefore there is no sense for them to create a bridge or ferry to this bridgehead – there is nowhere to move equipment from it. But real serious landing operation – to create a real bridgehead – is probably prepared in some other place. Or in several places.
Additionally, we note that in addition to the system of reports and approvals, the Russian Armed Forces are experiencing communication problems. Even in those units where bureaucracy has been minimized, the passage of information from forward units takes an unacceptably long time, which is sufficient for the enemy to hide.
Let me remind you of the common truth that “Communication is the main means of command and control of troops.”

💥 In addition, actions of four sabotage and reconnaissance groups of the AFU were thwarted near Liman Pervy, Sinkovka (Kharkov region), Novoselovskoye and Stelmakhovka (Lugansk People’s Republic).
◽️ An ammunition depot was annihilated close to Kislovka (Kharkov region).
◽️ Over 60 Ukrainian troops, one armoured fighting vehicle, three motor vehicles, one D-20 howitzer, and one Akatsiya self-propelled artillery gun were eliminated in this direction during the day.
💥 In Krasny Liman direction, Ground-Attack and Army aviation and artillery of the Tsentr Group of Forces engaged the units of the AFU close to Chervonopopovka, Chervonaya Dibrova (Lugansk People’s Republic), and Grigorovka and Serebryanka (Donetsk People’s Republic).
◽️ Up to 55 Ukrainian troops, two armoured fighting vehicles, two pick-up trucks, one D-20 howitzer, and one Gvozdika self-propelled artillery unit have been eliminated in this direction during the day.
💥 In Donetsk direction, the assault squads continue fighting in the west part of the city of Artyomovsk.
◽️ Airborne Troops have been impeding the attempts of the enemy to counterattack on the flanks, and support the assault squads to take control over the city.
💥 Operational-Tactical and Army aviation and artillery of the Yug Group of Forces inflicted a fire damage on the units of the AFU close to Krasnoye, Chasov Yar, and Predtechino (Donetsk People’s Republic).
◽️ The Russian aviation made 8 sotries to support the assault detachments. The artillery of the Yug Group of Forces have performed 69 fire missions.
◽️ Up to 310 Ukrainian troops, 4 armoured fighting vehicles, 3 motor vehicles, 1 Grad MLRS, 1 Msta-B howitzer, and 1 Gvozdika self-propelled artillery unit have been eliminated in this direction during the day.
💥 In South Donetsk and Zaporozhye directions, artillery and heavy flamethrower systems of the Vostok Group of Forces have hit AFU in the areas of Ugledar, Prechistovka (Donetsk People’s Republic), and Chervonoye.
◽️ Moreover, 2 ammunition depots of the AFU’s 65th Mechanised Brigade and 44th Artillery Brigade were destroyed close to Gulyapole and Poltavka (Zaporozhye region).
◽️ During the day in these directions the enemy suffered losses of up to 90 Ukrainian troops, 2 armoured fighting vehicles, 3 pickup trucks, and 1 Msta-B howitzer.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that UAF strikes on Russian territory is an acceptable tactic.

Kiev stated that NATO itself should “beg” Ukraine to join it
“NATO’s only goal is to fight Russia”, Ukrainian Ambassador to Britain Vadim Prystaiko said. He added that Kiev has “a million armed people” for this.
“If you want to have someone who is not only ready, but knows how to do it, ask Ukraine. Beg it to become part of your alliance,” Prystaiko advised.
This is usually a sign to me that something significant is taking place.
We know that Ukraine has been probing the lines at Kremmenaya front, and we’ve had reports of attacks along the line of contact in Zaporizhye front since around 18 hours ago.
What this silence means, I cannot know – but my intuition tells me that significant events are taking place in real time and the news is now quiet as it tries to parse this information before reporting.
So, best case scenario – everybody is sleeping at the same time.
Worst case – somebody finally opened the box and observed Schrodinger’s counteroffensive and so it is now taking place as I type this.
Maybe nothing is happening and there is a lull, but my gut tells me something significant is taking place at this moment – we’ll have to wait around 20-28 hours to hear reliable word.
