17-year-old Palestinian boy killed in Israeli raid
Israeli soldiers enter Palestinian home, ransack it and smash truck used to provide for the family
On Thursday, 16 March 2023, at around 4:00 A.M., dozens of soldiers arrived at the home of the Sarur family in the village of Ni’lin, east of Ramallah, and removed the gate to the yard. Several soldiers entered the first floor apartment, in which Ibrahim (65) and Zohadia (64) live. They ordered Ibrahim, at gunpoint, to gather everyone who was home. Other soldiers went to the second floor, where the couple’s son Diaa’ (38) lives with his wife Maysaa (36) and their three young children. The soldiers ordered Diaa’ to hand over the cellphones of all the apartment’s inhabitants. A few moments later, the soldiers brought Zohadia and her daughter Fidaa (36), who was sleeping over at her parents’ house, up to Diaa’s apartment, and gathered all the family members in the living room with a soldier guarding them.
For approximately half an hour, the family heard the soldiers moving around their home, dragging furniture and breaking their possessions. Three soldiers then entered the living room, led Diaa’ out of the house and handed him one of the soldiers’ phones. On the other end of the line, a man who called himself “Captain Dori” reprimanded Diaa’ for renting out sound equipment for an event celebrating the release of the father of Mu’taz al-Khawajah, who shot and killed three Israeli civilians in Tel Aviv on 8 March 2023. Diaa’ explained that he makes his living renting out the equipment. In response, “Dori” threatened to cause Diaa’ financial losses if he continued to take part in such events, adding: “Now look what I’m going to do to you.” At that moment, several soldiers began to vandalize Diaa’s truck, which was parked out front.
