WNV is hiring an Interviews Writer

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Waging Nonviolence is hiring a writer to interview leading movement figures and analysts and produce one Q&A-style article per week.

The writer will work with our small editorial team to identify the interview subject each week. For the most part, we’ll be looking to hear from activists, organizers and scholars who can shed light on movements that are currently making news. However, we’re also interested in interviewing historical figures, as well as authors, filmmakers and other creatives whose work pertains to social movements.

In short, the Interviews Writer should be someone who can identify compelling people to interview and facilitate engaging conversations that take readers behind the scenes of movement organizing. While most media focus on why protests are happening, our stories seek to uncover the how.

Each Q&A produced by the writer should include a brief introduction and be in the 1,500-word range. (Check out a few of our Q&As to see our general style.) We will provide access to an automated transcription service.

This is a remote (US-based) position that pays $150 per story, starting July 1. There will be a brief trial period, but otherwise the position is guaranteed through the end of 2023.

  • Able to thrive in a collaborative environment

  • Able to identify trending topics and conversations within movement organizing spaces
  • Experience working with Word and Google Docs

  • Knowledgeable on the history, theories, strategies and tactics of civil resistance/nonviolent action
  • Able to work consistent hours/days each week
