Don’t Be Surprised When “Help” Doesn’t Come!

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

I was in a store recently and heard a woman screaming for help. She was about three aisles over from me and when I made my way over there, she was trying to hold an older woman from hitting the floor. There was a crowd of people standing around her and she was still screaming for help. No one lifted a finger. Before I was able to get closer, the older woman fell into a display of glass.

At that time, one person from the crowd helped the woman lay the older woman on the floor as she was convulsing. I got on the phone with 911 as I got closer and it appeared as if the older woman was having a grand mal seizure, but it resembled more of a stroke. As I was on the phone with 911, the store employees were gathered around (with the other onlookers) and did absolutely nothing but talk on their radios to whomever. I looked at the woman and she was still posturing. The only thing that could be done until rescue arrived was to keep an open airway. They eventually showed up and transported the woman. I have no idea what ever happened to her.

If you have been reading Prepper Central for some time, you know we don’t always bring stories that have a happy ending. While personal experiences have made me numb to whatever the world throws at me, it still bothers me that our society has become so callous when it comes to helping others. Are scenes like this to be expected when there is a SHTF event? We saw horrendous acts with Hurricane Katrina, and that was just a storm. Could you imagine a catastrophe on a larger scale? It depends. Is it too late to instill some humanity into people?

While there are still some genuinely good people out there, there are still those who would do anything for self preservation. Is this what we want to save and rebuild after it all comes crashing down? While greed and corruption have destroyed governments around the globe, it is still the citizens who can make a difference. Take a moment and think about what you can do to have a positive affect on someone else’s life. We always hear about random acts of kindness, but do you try to do them often? The holidays are almost here and there are folks who are in need in your own community. Shelters and food banks always can use a helping hand. If you have children, instead of taking them to a movie, take them to volunteer at a homeless shelter serving food this Thanksgiving. There is still time and hope left.

You ask what does all this have to do with prepping? It plays a huge role. Our society has lost empathy and compassion for fellow man. If you are blessed with great resources to prepare, put some aside for those in your area that can’t. The elderly couple across the street or the single mother with her children down the road. There are many people living paycheck to paycheck who can’t afford to prep for anything. I’m not saying you need to become a martyr for your neighborhood, but you can do the right thing.

In the end, you know the right thing to do. I leave you with this question; if we were to need to rebuild our society after a catastrophe, how would you want people to treat each other?

Stay safe.
