Shotguns for Home Defense
Defending your castle. This should not only come naturally but you should always look for ways to improve. One tool that most people look to for home defense is the shotgun. While there are so many choices in the market, there are still some basics that you should follow and think about when it comes to shotguns.
I do believe that you should have at least three types of firearms in your home; a semi-automatic rifle, pistol, and shotgun. Basically your own three-gun challenge. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages in regards to the situation. When things go bump in the night, you always want the best option.
Even though there are so many opinions about firearms and tactics, it is up to you to come up with what works best for you. We found a video from James Yeager about the myths and realities of shotguns for home defense. We hope you can take some useful information away from it.

If you do decide to “go shotgun”, as a home defense tool, here are a few things to think upon:
1. Is it your first shotgun? If so, the much quoted Mas Ayoob has demonstrated that a”20 gauge” shotgun can be just as effective, without the greater boom and recoil, and size of gunframe, of a “12 gauge”. This will allow the person who grabs it to defend the house, husband, wife, older kids, not to be afriad of the shotgun. (The numbers run backwards from a huge “4 gauge”, down to a “.410 shotgun”-which has very good developed ammunition these days.
2. I would suggest, NOT, a mechanical loading device shotgun, of either pump or semi-automatic design, but a simple, older fashioned double-barreled shotgun. There are LONG barreled goose hunting guns, or the old “coach shotgun” of eighteen to twenty inch lengths. Coach guns are almost no longer than a “cowboy rfle”, and are easier to move around, and to retain a grasp upon, than a longer barreled one.
3. IF someone tells you that “ya gotta use buckshot or its no good”, do not believe them! For HOME DEFENSE, you do not need a bunch of ‘thrity caliber balls’ flying down the hallway. I DO suggest you look into ammunition called “#4 birdshot”. Mr. Ayoob suggests this as the sort of ammunition, for a shotgun for home defense.
4. Lastly, whichever style of shotgun you acquire, learn how to use it safely, maintain it safely, and to become familair with its particular shooting characteristics. YouTube has quite an array of videos, be it from Hickok45, Clint Smith, or Mas Ayoob.
(I have become aware that KSG makes a pump shotgun that is ‘short’, but has the capacity of 12 or 14 shotshells! Look up the Hickok45 video on this, and decide for yourself.)
I do have a shotgun for home defense and while out in nature…well, sort of. OK, I do not have an actual shotgun, it is however a .38+P loaded with #2 shot. So a shotgun when I need or a speed loaded .38 if I am in need of that media. 2 weapons in one, seated firmly in my leg holster.
