My 80 year old, retired, wheelchair bound neighbor confessed to me this weekend that money has been very tight for the first time ever. This is even after the COLA adjustment to her SS payments. She let her housekeeper go and her house needs to be cleaned. There is no physical way she can do it herself. She is trying to get a voucher for housekeeping but it is going very slow and its hard to get the agencies on the phone (i guess medicare?) .. I told her I would come clean her house. She told me her energy bills were sky high over the summer – like 2 or 3 times higher than ever before. She said she paid them but it hurt and knocked out all of her budget. We have been working on getting her energy bills under control. I found her some good deals to get locked into. I found out that Texans who rely on electric medical equipment are supposed to be offered a discount on their electric bills. She told me she called and they said yes – a one time discount of $20. REALLY!?! I feel like that’s a lie, almost offensive. She has gotten signed up for meals on wheels and that just started to be delivered which thank god because grocery money has become the last thing on her budget. Im so sad. This lady is in a way better position that so many others her age. Her home, car and most of her medical debt are paid off. She has huge discounts on her property taxes because she is 65+ and owns her home outright. She has SS income and she get a little bit of money from an old oil and gas lease her mother left her. Her daughter pays for her cell phone and a couple of other misc bills for her. I offered to pay her lawn guy, its $70/month for 2 basic cuts, but her grandson covers that. So I shudder at the though of the struggles of others. Bless our country.

UPDATE I can confirm that 99% of the Walmart online pantry items are no longer available to ship. I normally use the quick add option for food items I have had sipped to my door in the past and now the only items that will ship are coffee and name brand soups. Here is a short list of items they no longer ship in GV brand. Tuna, pork&beans, soups, canned chicken, vinegar, small bags of sugar, coffee creamers, refried beans, ect ect you get the point.

In UK we have whole aisles full of Christmas stock. It just hit me that they are hiding the shortages this way.

Update! Prices in the grocery stores have skyrocketed. Meats up at least 20% milk and eggs up 20%. Shortages of certain brands too. This is getting out of hand!
