Making your own jewelry with jewelry beads can be a fun and creative pastime. However, a bracelet or necklace is merely a string of jewelry beads until you attach the clasps. Jewelry clasps fasten necklaces and bracelets so that they remain in place on the wearer. They are given several types, but the most used jewelry clasps are S-Clasp, Toggle Clasp, Lobster Clasp, and Hook-and-Eye Clasp.
S-Clasp
An S-clasp is an S-shaped hook that is a simple design and easy to handle. Both ends of a chain have an S-shaped hook that you fasten into either ring, which is also attached to either end of the chain. While it is visually appealing, it can also come loose easily after extended wear.
Toggle Clasp
The toggle clasp is visually appealing but can be a little tricky to handle, depending on the specific style. A toggle has a T-bar on one end of the chain, which you insert into an open center at the other end of the chain. Sometimes this open center that holds the T-bar in place and secures the necklace or bracelet is round, square or oval. When the open centers are round and square, they are easier to handle. Toggle clasps with oval openings are trickier to handle and more prone to coming loose.
Lobster Clasp
The lobster clasp is one of the most popular clasps in modern-day jewelry, and also one of the most secure. Aptly named, when you open a lobster clasp by pressing on its hinge, it opens a ring to form a claw shape. You then insert the smaller ring at the other end of the chain onto the claw and close it to secure the two ends together in place.
Hook-and-Eye Clasp
The hook-and-eye clasp is very popular and easy to handle. There is a hook at one end of the chain and an eye, or small ring, at the other end. You insert the hook into the eye to secure the necklace or bracelet in place. While it is very easy to handle, the hook can come loose, and after extended use, the hook can stretch out and slip off the eye easily.
