13 December 2011 – Leveraging reputation of an expert or trusted name in any niche works well for any affiliate marketer, but even if only other affiliates are the ones sending traffic through their own personal reviews of products, so long as they are balanced and of high quality, they become reputable in the eyes of potential consumers.

This is good news for affiliates who have very little pull or influence in their niche, i.e. those who just started marketing. When neophytes join an affiliate network they get the chance to interact with some of the influential marketers in their chosen niches, but the same problem persists: how can affiliate reviews make good traffic and generate conversions if the names reviewing are also not that widely known?

It is true that online spending behavior often hinges on recommendations made by consumers’ friends, family, or trusted sources of info. But when no one in their closest peer circle can offer enough info, reputation replaces trust, and most consumers would look for reviews of products or services from reputable names and established websites. This concept of reputation need not be solid, however, that is to say even the regular Joe can become a suitable voice of recommendation given that he has firsthand experience with the product or service, and that he is unbiased.

These two elements are central to establishing trust between people in the Internet: someone who reviews or recommends and someone who wants some info. The best examples would be how much attention people give to review sections of large retailers like Amazon or eBay. The aggregated scores given by numerous reviewers also serve to solidify the rating.

What this means for affiliate reviews is so long as the affiliate has firsthand, preferably hands on experience with the product or service he or she is trying to promote and he reviews or recommends it in an unbiased way (e.g. citing some bad or weak points), the review will more likely be trusted by consumers, therefore providing marketing value aside from traffic. If you intend to use an affiliate review site, you should bear these in mind.
