Intermedix Facilitates Distribution of Critical Public Safety Alerts

Intermedix introduced its IPAWS integration at the National Weather Service (NWS) / FEMA exhibit during this week’s International Consumer Electronics Show.

Intermedix Corporation, a leading provider of technology-enabled solutions for the US healthcare and emergency response industries, recently introduced the latest updates to its notification solution, which now allows clients to participate in FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) by sending Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) messages.

CMAS complements the existing national Emergency Alert System (EAS) to communicate critical presidential, AMBER, and imminent threat alerts to mobile phones using technology that will not become backlogged during an emergency situation. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and wireless carriers have partnered to provide this system, which is now operational on all major cell carriers and new mobile phones. Intermedix worked closely with FEMA to incorporate this functionality into its notification solution. It incorporates features such as an integrated map interface for a targeted geographic area and distribution control mechanisms to ensure the solution is highly functional yet easy to use during emergency events.

One of the most active organizations using the Intermedix notification solution is the City and County of San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management, which distributes public safety alerts through AlertSF (alertsf.org). AlertSF currently has approximately 35,000 registrants in a city that can reach a daytime population of 1.5 million. Lucas Eckroad, Operations Planner, identified CMAS as a critical tool for increasing San Francisco’s ability to notify the public of imminent threats, and worked closely with Intermedix to effectively incorporate this functionality into AlertSF. Mr. Eckroad commented on the value of CMAS for San Francisco:

“AlertSF is one of the many systems we use to communicate with the public, but we are constantly looking for ways to improve our reach to both residents and visitors during emergency situations. One of the biggest challenges we face is communicating critical information to non-residents and residents who have not yet registered for AlertSF. Since text alerts are the primary method for us to disseminate public alerts and warnings, CMAS was the logical choice to help bridge this gap. CMAS lets us bypass the opt-in issue and reach everyone’s smartphone. Intermedix helped integrate the CMAS function into our pre-existing AlertSF system resulting in an interface with which my staff is already familiar. With CMAS I am confident that we are ready to reach a much greater portion of the population the next time a critical event takes place.”
