National Wildlife Officials Help Bears Keep Warm with Newly Installed Ductless Heat Pumps

Bears are notorious for their long winter naps. Every summer, bears start stocking up to get long, winter coats that will keep them warm for several months, but that has not been enough the past few years.

“The past few years bears have been unable to grow winter coats thick enough to keep them warm”, said animal expert, Kerri Hemmingway. “We are unsure exactly what the problem is that is causing this problem, but it may have something to do with global warming.”

Animal experts believe that global warming is causing the winter months to be colder than normal, and the summer months to be warmer. The warmer summer months prevents common food that bears eat from growing, which prevents bears from gaining access to the valuable food they need.

“There is not enough food for the bears to eat”, said Hemmingway. “When bears cannot get access to this food, their coats cannot grow thick enough for them to say warm. Something had to be done or we could be looking at bears becoming extinct.”

National Wildlife Officials have decided to install small, portable ductless heat pumps in a number of the caves that are used by the bears. A single, ductless heat pump could keep the entire cave warm for the entire winter without costing too much.

“The best part of a ductless heat pump is that it requires no complicated duct system that could prevent us from putting them into caves”, explained John Green, a PR rep for the National Wildlife Organization. “This was a perfect solution that we needed to do or see bears disappear completely.”

The decision to install these ductless heat pumps in the caves did not come easy. Discussion over the issue started 2 years ago, when wildlife officials noticed that bears were having issues. The discussions carried on for several months, until it was finally brought to a vote.

“We voted on the issue after all the facts were presented”, explained John Green. “Surprisingly, the issue passed with a vote of 20 to 1. That was enough for us to start installing the ductless heat pumps immediately.”

The wildlife organization has installed over 50 ductless heat pumps in various caves across the area. There is no telling what caves the bears will use for the winter, but the 50 heat pumps cover almost 80% of the caves.

“There is a good chance all bears will be protected this winter”, said Green. “We are excited about that and really hopeful for the future.”
