~TAMPA, Fla. – (Jan. 30, 2013) – Twenty tons of garbage is off the streets in and around the University area thanks to a community effort spearheaded by the University Area Community Development Corporation (UACDC).

More than 1,000 volunteers converged on the area Saturday, Jan. 18 as part of the second annual ‘Paint the Town’ event where residents and community organizations worked to clear shrubs, trim trees, collect garbage and paint walls throughout the neighborhood. They also harvested vegetables in the community garden and began clearing the pond adjacent to the future site of the University Area Harvest Hope Center.

“It’s always great to see so many community organizations come together to make a true impact on the lives of others,” said UACDC’s Executive Director & CEO, Dan Jurman, “Taking that weight off our streets is key to restoring pride in our neighborhood.”

‘Paint the Town’ also kicked off the start of the painting of the Harvest Hope Center mural, which was designed by students and instructors from UACDC’s Prodigy cultural arts program.
Volunteer groups who took part in cleaning up the University area included area residents, religious and community organizations, residential associations and local student groups from USF.
