Leading Neurosurgeon Nancy E. Epstein, MD, to be Recognized as a 2016 Top Doctor in Mineola, New York

Nancy E. Epstein, MD is the only neurosurgeon in the Winthrop University Hospital (WUH) NeuroScience Department (Mineola, NY), where she is the Chief of Neurosurgical Spine, Research, and Education. In 2016, she has been named a Top Doctor in Mineola, New York. Dr. Nancy E. Epstein is one of New York’s most experienced neurosurgeons, having been in practice for more than 34 years. Her medical career began in 1976, when she graduated from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons AOA (Alpha Omega Alpha Society). She completed an internship (1976-1977) and then a residency in neurosurgery (1977-December 1981) at New York University Hospital-Bellevue Medical Center under the legendary neurosurgeon Dr. Joseph Ransohoff.

Dr. Epstein was the 12th woman to be board certified in Neurosurgery in 1984. Dr. Epstein remains an active member of many professional organizations; AMA, American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), Spine Section of the AANS/CNS,  and the Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS) amongst others. She was the Program Chair for both the Spine Section of the AANS/CNS, and the CSRS in the 1990’s, and became the second female President of the Cervical Spine Research Society in 2001 (established in 1976). Notably, Dr. Joseph A. Epstein, her father, and also a spinal neurosurgeon, had been President of the CSRS in 1981 when Dr. Nancy E. Epstein gave her first paper.

Dr. Epstein is on the editorial boards of many spine journals;  Spine, The Spine Journal, Journal of Spinal Disorders/Techniques, Spinal Surgery (Japan), Spinal Cord (England; Emeritus), Surgical Neurology (ceased publishing 2009), and Surgical Neurology International (SNI: publishing since 2009). She is also the Editor of SNI Spine. She has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles/chapters in her career, and lectures both nationally and internationally focusing on degenerative diseases of the spine. In the last two years alone, she has lectured in Korea, Japan, and Brazil.

She was the Chief of Neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital (1991-2001). During that time she was also a Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In 2002, she moved her practice to WUH.

As a trailblazer in neurosurgery, and with a reputation for clinical excellence, Dr. Nancy E. Epstein is a very worthy winner of a 2016 Top Doctor Award.
