Encouraged by thirst for knowledge and innovative mindset, the developers of US-owned app development company Erminesoft have carried out some challenging experiments. The goal was to sort out the activation of various electric appliances with the use of a cellular phone. To implement their idea, they’ve chosen the Raspberry Pi, a credit card-sized single-board computer developed in the United Kingdom by the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Raspberry Pi utilizes ARM compatible Broadcom’s SoCs and uses as the main programming language, accompanied with Scratch and Java.

The fan was chosen as the key element of the experiment. The developers decided to control the cutting and supplying power to a fan, which was standing on the desk.The fan was connected to the power source through a filtering relay, controlled by Raspberry Pi. The own switch of the fan was always “on”, and a command from the Pi’s port to the relay could supply or cut the power. As the result, the fan started working at a full force. It means, that a full room of appliances could be connected to a set of filter-relays and switching on and off can be controlled by a time-table, pattern, rule or a direct command.

The next step was the software.The task was to ask the Pi to blink HR’s desk lamp.It worked out.It was loaded to the new server, which gives the command to filter-relays. Eventually, the developers have created an Android app, which direct commands over WiFi connection and then makes a full control over server’s functions.

Then the developers moved on in the complexity of their experiment.The next step was a more precise control over the appliances, than just switching them on and off. For this once, it was the office air-conditioner to examine. The own aircon’s remote was used to teach an IR transceiver connected to the loyal Pi aircon’s commands. With the sequential commands on the remote the control over the climate machine was implemented.

At this stage, Erminesoft developers can control the heating, cooling, lights, security sensors and webcams, using an Android app and server support.

The experiment is considered to be a success. With a simple Android app connecting to a Raspberry Pi, it’s possible to run the server software. However, Erminesoft developers tend to believe that not only the control is allowable. There can be much to implement with the help of the Raspberry Pi. It’s a rather challenging issue to examine and draw universally beneficial conclusions.
