It’s In the Eyes

A Little Over A Year Later…

I was having some car problems that, no matter what I did, couldn’t seem to get resolved. My father kept insisting I take it to the same place he took his vehicles, but I was procrastinating due to funds.

I headed up to the store to pick up a prescription. It was winter, and the cold air cut through my face like hundreds of tiny knives. My head down, I rushed in as fast as I could.  Behind the counter was the same chubby girl with black hair, and in the aisle was the same old woman who was always straightening and restocking the shelves.

On the way out, I stopped to check out some new cosmetics that were on display. As I knelt down, two men in automotive uniforms walked passed, chuckling amongst themselves. The tall, attractive one glanced down at me and made eye contact. Bashful, I quickly looked away.

Five minutes later, he was at the counter, and they were joking around laughing with the chubby cashier.  When I looked over to see what all the commotion was about, once again, the tall attractive man was glancing back at me smiling.  And, just as I had previously done, I looked away. 

There was something in that momentary stare that I have never forgotten. It was a knowing, as if he was able to see deep inside of my very soul, reading me like an open book.  Strange and pleasantly insane, it apprehended me and pulled me in. I was trapped right then and there. However, I had no clue how trapped I really was.

Things became even stranger.

Approximately two weeks later, my father finally convinced me to take my car in and have it checked out by the guys he used. A heavy-set man was speaking with me about what they thought the problem might be when he walked out. It was him! The man from the store two weeks prior. Yes! These were the same two men who had been talking and laughing, and the same attractive man who had made eye contact with me twice.

He smiled knowingly without acknowledging that he remembered me as he announced what was wrong with my car. I made an appointment to bring it back for repairs and left.

When I brought it back a week later, he called me out to the shop to show me another problem he had discovered.  As I turned to head back up to the lobby, he stopped me.

His arm extended, I noticed a small yellow sticky note in his hand, “Here’s my number. If you’re interested in getting together sometime, call me.” he smiled flirtatiously.

Blushing, and unsure how to react, I answered, “Oh, sure. Thank you. But I have children.”

He smiled. His hands covered in oil, he wiped the sweat from his forhead with the back of his arm instead. “I don’t give a crap about that,” he said. “I have a kid! Kids are great!”

I smiled back, thanked him, and left.

I was flattered, but had no real intention of calling this man. After all, he did not know me. He was probably one of those sleeze bags who handed his number out to women the same way people handed out candy to children on Beggar’s Night. Afterall, I was probably not the first woman that week to receive the little yellow sticky note.

Three nights later, I had the note in my hand over the trash can, and was just about to release it. But something in my head stopped me. I stared at it for a few seconds and then walked over to the couch.

That’s when I picked up my phone and started dialing.

I waited, and was just about to hang up when he answered. I wish I would have hung up. In fact, it would have been a blessing in disguise had I done so.

Every evening, for the next few days, we talked on the phone. For hours we yammered on about all sorts of things. He told me what an honest, good natured person he was, painting a picture of a man who was a real catch.

By the following week, we got together. But it was during our second get-together that he brought with him a CD of a band named Breaking Benjamin.

“There’s a song I want you to hear. I don’t know why, but whenever it plays on the radio, I think of you,” he smiled.

I listened, and I didn’t really think much of the rest of the lyrics, only the part that he made the big deal out of, “You take the breath right out of me….” as if breathlessly in love. It wouldn’t be until a few months later that I would re-listen to the song and pay closer attention to its cryptic, chilling words.
