The Return Of The Nephilim: Disney's 1997 Hercules Predicts They Are Coming in 2015
Renee M: In the year 1997, a movie called “Hercules” came out. This is a direct quote from that movie: “In 18 years precisely, the planets will align so nicely. The time to act will be at hand. Unleash the Titans, you monstrous band. Then the once proud Zeus will finally fall, and you, Hades, will rule all.” 1997 + 18 years = 2015. Another quote from this movie: “The gods that killed your family have unleashed hell on earth. They are the descendants of Hades – they cannot be killed by an ordinary mortal.”
The Nephilim were the offspring of sexual relationships between the sons of God and daughters of men in Genesis 6:1–4. There is much debate as to the identity of the “sons of God.” It is our opinion that the “sons of God” were fallen angels (demons) who mated with human females or possessed human males who then mated with human females. These unions resulted in offspring, the Nephilim, who were “heroes of old, men of renown” (Genesis 6:4).
Were there Nephilim after the flood?Genesis 6:4tells us, “The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward.” It seems that the demons repeated their sin sometime after the flood as well. However, it likely took place to a much lesser extent than it did prior to the flood. When the Israelites spied out the land of Canaan, they reported back to Moses: “We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them” (Numbers 13:33).
This passage does not say the Nephilim were genuinely there, only that the spiesthoughtthey saw the Nephilim. It is more likely that the spies witnessed very large people in Canaan and in their fear believed them to be the Nephilim. Or it is possible that after the flood the demons again mated with human females, producing more Nephilim. It is even possible that some traits of the Nephilim were passed on through the heredity of one of Noah’s daughters-in-law. Whatever the case, these “giants” were destroyed by the Israelites during their invasion of Canaan (Joshua 11:21–22) and later in their history (Deuteronomy 3:11;1 Samuel 17).
Fallen Angels
The New American Bible commentary draws a parallel to the Epistle of Jude and the statements set forth in Genesis, suggesting that the Epistle refers implicitly to the paternity of nephilim as heavenly beings who came to earth and had sexual intercourse with women. The footnotes of the Jerusalem Bible suggest that the biblical author intended the nephilim to be an “anecdote of a superhuman race”.
Some Christian commentators have argued against this view, citing Jesus’s statement that angels do not marry. Others believe that Jesus was only referring to angels in heaven.
Descendants of Seth and Cain
Orthodox Judaism has taken a stance against the idea that Genesis 6 refers to angels or that angels could intermarry with men. Shimon bar Yochai pronounced a curse on anyone teaching this idea. Rashi and Nachmanides followed this. Pseudo-Philo, Biblical Antiquities 3:1–3 may also imply that the “sons of God” were human.
Consequently, most Jewish commentaries and translations describe the Nephilim as being from the offspring of “sons of nobles”, rather than from “sons of God” or “sons of angels”. This is also the rendering suggested in the Targum Onqelos, Symmachus and the Samaritan Targum which read “sons of the rulers”, where Targum Neophyti reads “sons of the judges”.
Likewise, a long-held view among some Christians is that the “sons of God” were the formerly righteous descendants of Seth who rebelled, while the “daughters of men” were the unrighteous descendants of Cain, and the nephilim the offspring of their union. This view, dating to at least the 1st century AD in Jewish literature as described above, is also found in Christian sources from the 3rd century if not earlier, with references throughout the Clementine literature, as well as in Sextus Julius Africanus, Ephrem the Syrian and others. Holders of this view have looked for support in Jesus’ statement that “in those days before the flood they [humans] were… marrying and giving in marriage” (Matthew 24:38).
Some individuals and groups, including St. Augustine, John Chrysostom, and John Calvin, take the view of Genesis 6:2 that the “Angels” who fathered the nephilim referred to certain human males from the lineage of Seth, who were called sons of God probably in reference to their prior covenant with Yahweh (cf. Deuteronomy 14:1; 32:5); according to these sources, these men had begun to pursue bodily interests, and so took wives of the daughters of men, e.g., those who were descended from Cain or from any people who did not worship God.
This also is the view of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, supported by their own Ge’ez manuscripts and Amharic translation of the Haile Selassie Bible—where the books of 1 Enoch and Jubilees, counted as canonical by this church, differ from western academic editions. The “Sons of Seth view” is also the view presented in a few extra-biblical, yet ancient works, including Clementine literature, the 3rd century Cave of Treasures, and the ca. 6th Century Ge’ez work The Conflict of Adam and Eve with Satan. In these sources, these offspring of Seth were said to have disobeyed God, by breeding with the Cainites and producing wicked children “who were all unlike”, thus angering God into bringing about the Deluge, as in the Conflict:
Certain wise men of old wrote concerning them, and say in their [sacred] books, that angels came down from heaven, and mingled with the daughters of Cain, who bare unto them these giants. But these [wise men] err in what they say. God forbid such a thing, that angels who are spirits, should be found committing sin with human beings. Never, that cannot be. And if such a thing were of the nature of angels, or Satans, that fell, they would not leave one woman on earth, undefiled… But many men say, that angels came down from heaven, and joined themselves to women, and had children by them. This cannot be true. But they were children of Seth, who were of the children of Adam, that dwelt on the mountain, high up, while they preserved their virginity, their innocence and their glory like angels; and were then called ‘angels of God.’ But when they transgressed and mingled with the children of Cain, and begat children, ill-informed men said, that angels had come down from heaven, and mingled with the daughters of men, who bear them giants.

First of all, it should be pointed out that angels are not humans, they are quite different creations of God. Satan and the other angels are spirit beings, and simply cannot have physical offspring (children). They do not marry (Matt. 22:30, Mark 12:25), they are incapable of procreation, and so are genderless creatures.
Let’s look at this passage in an attempt to shed some light:
Gen 6:1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
Gen 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
Gen 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
Gen 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
Gen 6:5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Gen 6:6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
Gen 6:7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
Gen 6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
So now let’s evaluate each verse, and what it is saying-
Gen 6:1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
This verse is straightforward. The human population on earth began to increase in numbers.
Gen 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
Now this verse is full of meaning. Some will point to Job 1:6, 2:1 and 38:7 where the same phrase “sons of God” is translated sometimes as angels, and conclude that this also refers to angels as well. The Hebrew words used are – ben: H1121 and ‘elohiym: H430:
1121. ben, bane; from H1129; a son (as a builder of the family name), in the widest sense (of lit. and fig. relationship, including grandson, subject, nation, quality or condition, etc., [like H1, H251, etc.]) …
So the phrase “Sons of God” is a generic term that can mean the subjects or nation of God. It is not a phrase limited to just the angelic host, it has a wider meaning.
The sons of God in Gen 6:2, in context, speaks of those men who were (or claimed to be) obedient to the will of God, they were the people of God, from the lineage of Seth (Gen. 5). In opposition to this are the daughters of men (not obedient to God), from the lineage of Cain (Gen. 4). These woman were quite attractive and alluring, and had little trouble enticing the sons of God into intimate relations and marriage. In doing so, the sons of God quickly abandoned God for these women and their ways.
This is basically a retelling of the fall of Adam and Eve. Eve listened to the lies of Satan and doubted God. She ate from the forbidden tree and fell from the spiritual nature she previously enjoyed. That tree was the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Gen 2:9, 17). Upon eating from the tree, Eve was aware of what she had done. She now had the knowledge of evil and she was aware that she had sinned against God. In that knowledge, and having fallen, she then offered the fruit from the tree to Adam.
Adam was not deceived (1 Tim 2:14). He knew when he saw Eve that she had sinned, because she had lost the spiritual glow that results from being in close spiritual harmony with God. Moses had this same glow when he came down from Sinai (Exo 34:29, 30). Adam elected to eat the fruit, knowing what he was doing. His love for Eve (whom he knew had sinned) was greater than his love of God.
This is a tactic used time and again by Satan. The downfall of God’s people is frequently through the temptations of godless women (See Numbers 25:1-9). Other examples that come to mind are Samson and Delilah, and David and Bathsheba.
So, now back to Gen 6:2. The same basic scenario is being repeated after the garden of Eden, only on a larger scale. There is a wholesale abandonment of God and his righteous ways by the descendents of Seth for women of the lineage of Cain, known to be in rebellion and sin. This is what God calls fornication, not referring only to a sexual sin, but the sin of mixing the righteous with the wicked, truth with evil. (One example of this is the word fornication as attributed to the harlot church in Rev 17:4 and 18:3) This sin was so prevalent, and so blatant a rejection of God that it could not be allowed to continue indefinitely.
Gen 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
God in this verse has just set a period of probation of 120 years on the human race to repent of their wicked ways. It could not be allowed to continue.
Gen 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
The word “giants” here in the Hebrew is listed in Strong’s as follows-
5303. nephiyl, nef-eel’; or nephil, nef-eel’; from H5307; prop., a feller[*], i.e. a bully or tyrant:–giant.
*Main Entry: 4fell
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English fel, from Middle French, from Old French — more at FELON
1 a : FIERCE, CRUEL, TERRIBLE b : SINISTER, MALEVOLENT c : very destructive : DEADLY — Webster’s Online
So rather than being perhaps physical giants, in contrast to the meek people of god, these people were rebellious bullies and tyrants, forceful in character and great in their sins. This same phrase of “giants” is also used to describe the Canaanites following the exodus (Num 13:33). Again, this probably referred to their godless and lawless character, as much as their physical stature.
Gen 6:5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
The fault here is laid squarely on the wickedness of the people themselves. The first part of this verse is a restatement of the first part of verse 4. As a result of choosing godless women, men were turned away from God as well, and sin and wickedness flourished. God was rejected, and forgotten.
Sin became so great, that God had to bring the flood on them, to cleanse the earth of such great wickedness.
Gen 6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
Gen 6:9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.
Noah was the exception, and he was given the task to build the ark, that would be the refuge from the flood for those obedient to God.
So, now back to the popular story about this passage. Based on a very narrow interpretation of the phrase “sons of God” as found here in Genesis, and bolstered by Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7; and Psalms 29:1; 82:6, the case is made that this is referring to heavenly beings/angels that interbred with women, causing a ghastly mixed breed of creatures that God had to destroy.
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
The above verses make clear that phrase “sons of God” applies to anyone with faith. Note how the righteous 144,000 are described
Rev 14:4 These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.
“Not defiled with women” alludes back to Genesis 6 and the sons of God and the daughters of men. The 144,000 walk with God just like Noah, and are not defiled by the great whore of Revelation 17, or her harlot daughters, which are symbolic of apostasy.
So the angelic interbreeding story appears to be nothing more than an attempt to put the blame on angels rather than man. The passage in Genesis 6 speaks only to the wickedness of humanity, and places no blame at all on angels. Humanity had turned their back on God, and did it on such a scale that God was moved to destroy them. Yet, God in His mercy, amid all the wickedness, still did not act hastily to exact his judgment. He gave humanity a period of probation. A time of 120 years, during which Noah could preach the message of God, of repentance and faith. Through that period of probation, people heard the word of God, that they might be saved. Eventually Noah and 7 members of his family were saved in the ark.
Luke 17:26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
Luke 17:27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.
It should be clear, to even a casual reader, that we have entered into the days of the Son of Man. History is repeating itself. There are “giants” on the Earth again. The Nephilim, those who follow the way of Cain, and are bold in their rebellion against God, again are filling the earth with sin and violence. Man’s cup of iniquity is again reaching the brim, and God will not let it continue much longer. We have no angels to place blame on, and neither did those people in the time of Noah. Mankind is willfully abandoning God for the sake of the sins of iniquity. Yes, Satan and the other fallen angels can tempt mankind, just as Eve was tempted, but the choice to sin was Eve’s and Adam’s, and is also ours to make. The door of probation is soon to close again on this wicked world, just as it did for the people of Noah’s generation, but this will be for the final time.

Genesis 6:4, “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”
First, the word “giants” is translated as follows…
Strongs # H5303
נפל נפיל nephîyl nephil nef-eel’, nef-eel’
From H5307; properly, a feller, that is, a bully or tyrant: – giant.
It is obvious where the word “Nephilim” came from that is used in bibles other then the King James. However, it appears the proper definition is more apt to be declaring they were bullies rather then men of gigantic proportions. Or “larger then life” as some are called today. This also shows how the devil can easily distort a single word in the bible to generate a totally different outcome. Back then, the word “giant” had one meaning, today another. The “cultural” changes of language and even slang terms cause people that are unaware of this fact of life to use their own understandings of these words to decipher Scripture. The Word of God is thousands of years old and cannot be defined by today’s languages. To do so is to assume to be able to understand ancient terminology. Without understanding what the words meant to the people in the day it was penned, you cannot possibly know what the truth is on any given topic if in fact that topic carries a word changed by modern man. So be careful when studying the Word of God. It can be a gold mine of wonderful truths if handled correctly.
After researching the word “Nephilim” a little more to close the case on this, I found it to be a word adopted via the Apocryphal book of Enoch which was later placed in Strong’s Concordance and other bible dictionaries as if it was a word used in the original King James Bible. When the word is examined in all formats (dictionary, Strong’s Concordance, Encyclopedias, bible commentaries, etc) it proves the word “giants” in Genesis 6:4 is still better translated using words of today like, “bullies, cruel, terrible, sinister, felons, etc” Only in man’s “opinion” do we hear this strange concoction of demonic monsters raping women. Nowhere in Scriptures does such an account find validity.
Using a time sensitive context viewpoint on this we see that when you look at the meek and gentle people of God in contrast to the, fighters, bullies, and felons of the Nephilim, we find they would indeed appear as giants because of their strange and hateful ways that “overpower” the meek. Something the gentle people of God saw as strange and “larger then life” I’m sure, because being lead of God they would naturally walk in a more loving manner. Scientific fact is, before the flood, all people were “giants” in the true sense of the word by today’s standard. Men were on average 16 feet tall and women around 14 feet. After the flood, mankind lost a lot more then years of life. They lost their magnificent stature as well. To further illustrate my findings regarding the word “giants” in Genesis 6:4. The Easton Bible Dictionary’s first definition of “giants” is as follows…
(1.) Heb. nephilim, meaning “violent” or “causing to fall” (Gen. 6:4). These were the violent tyrants of those days, those who fell upon others. The word may also be derived from a root signifying “wonder,” and hence “monsters” or “prodigies.” In Num. 13:33 this name is given to a Canaanitish tribe, a race of large stature, “the sons of Anak.” The Revised Version, in these passages, simply transliterates the original, and reads “Nephilim.”
If you investigate the word “giants ” in Genesis 6:4 you will find it speaks more of their “attitude” size rather then their “physical” size.
One last thing. As many are aware, we have entered into the last days. History is literally repeating itself in the way Jesus described this earth would be today. It is most assuredly like the “days of Noah” is it not? I can clearly see that there are again “giants” in the land when I look around and see people who follow the way of Cain that are bold in their sin against the Lord and each other. They are again filling the earth with all sorts of sin and violence just like in Noah’s day just before the flood. Their actions are of course bringing on their own final judgment as it was in Noah’s day. The cup of iniquity is nearing the brim speedily. Man is willfully placing their sinful pleasures above God and His peace. Problem is, there is no second chance after this great and dreadful day. When I look around with Christian eyes, I too see “giants in the land.”
As for the “sons of God” in Genesis 6:4 being translated to depict fallen angels. Common sense has to be graphically called upon here to ask the question. Would God call fallen angels the sons of God? Some say the “sons of God” are good angels as well. However, Mark 12:25 says we will be like Angels that can’t “marry” when Heaven starts…
Mark 12:25, “For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.”
So, if the “sons of God” are now good angels in Genesis 6:4, they are now committing adultery and or fornication by having sex with women without marriage.
Who are the “sons of God” according to your bibles? Read the following passages most that preach “sons of God = angels” never seem to share…
John 1:12, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”
Romans 8:14, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
Romans 8:19, “For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.”
Philippians 2:15, “That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;”
1 John 3:1, “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.”
1 John 3:2, “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”
Does this series of passages describe fallen angels? Or is it describing the followers of God? The Sons of God were, and still are the people of God. They sinned in that they took women to wife that God specifically commanded against. It’s that simple.
2 peter 2:4
We have the power within us to defeat them, we have the whole universe within us and are more powerful than you can imagine, we are the heros we have been waiting for.
