Marines Celebrating But James ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis Has One Huge Problem (Video)
Following President-elect Donald Trump’s announcement that we would nominate retired Marine Corps Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis as his secretary of defense, only one notable impediment stood in the general’s way — congressional Democrats.
According to U.S. Code 113, an individual “may not be appointed as Secretary of Defense within seven years after relief from active duty.”
This meant that for Mattis’ nomination to be confirmed, Congress (which sadly still contained some Democrats) will have to pass a waiver. But because of the tough-talking general’s “reputation as a blunt military strategist,” as CNBC described it, there stood a pretty hefty chance that some Senate Democrats would try to block his nomination.
Mind you, Mattis’ straightforward attitude was exactly what made him such an appealing choice to so many conservatives, including even notorious “Never Trump” Republican David French, who spent the bulk of the election season bashing the then-GOP nominee over and over again.
“Donald Trump has picked an honorable, thoughtful, and courageous warrior to lead the Pentagon,” French wrote in a National Review column Thursday. “He knows how to lead men in battle. He’s an outstanding strategic thinker, and he’s unencumbered by politically correct nonsense.”
The former “Never Trumper” was especially impressed by the general’s “legendary” statements, including this one: “Find the enemy that wants to end this experiment (in American democracy) and kill every one of them until they’re so sick of the killing that they leave us and our freedoms intact.”
“Mad Dog” was at his core an unrepentant, straight-shooting and seasoned military strategist, revered in the Marine Corps and known for both his “battlefield experience in Iraq and Afghanistan” and his “distrust of Iran,” according to Reuters.
Mattis was in effect the perfect man for the job of repairing the tremendous damage President Barack Obama has done to America on the international stage — and thus he represented the antithesis of everything liberal Democrat politicians stand for.
Being confirmed by Congress is not apt to be easy task for this military leader, but thankfully, he suspect he’s more than equipped to handle the battle ahead.
