He Puts a Ring From a Tree Trunk on a Record Player - When it Starts to Play, I Got Chills All Over! (Video)

Music is indeed all around us, but I never thought a gorgeous piece of music could be found in a cross-section of a tree trunk.

Artist Bartholomaus Traubeck designed and built a record player that “reads” the texture and color variations of tree rings and interprets them as music. Because every tree has its own configuration of rings, every tree has its own song.

By doing this, Traubeck has essentially created the infinite library of records. You must love the time we live in.

If you think Nature would sound like crackling and random noises, think again. This is actually beautiful.

I love the idea of this. I just can’t trust BIN anymore to provide me with legitimate news. It is my toilet read, much like the National Enquirer. Nothing like pinching a loaf to BS … (pun intended).

I found this:- Quote: A tree’s year rings are analysed for their strength, thickness and rate of growth. This data serves as basis for a generative process that outputs piano music. It is mapped to a scale which is again defined by the overall appearance of the wood (ranging from dark to light and from strong texture to light texture). The foundation for the music is certainly found in the defined ruleset of programming and hardware setup, but the data acquired from every tree interprets this ruleset very differently.

      Bullshit.

Listened, that is actually a piano – real tree rings would sound exactly like a scuffed record.

        Or you could be wrong.

Well I tried it with a slice of tree from my wood pile all i got was some scratchy noise and a ruined needle.

You should have tried playing it through your laser player instead of your turntable. I did that and it sounds like a whole orchestra, not just a piano. The laser brings out the drums, cymbals, violins, oboes…everything. I’ll never have to buy another cd, I have wood everywhere.

This isnt “playing” the rings, and its not reading them the way a record would.

All he designed is something that scans the rings visually using light, and pipes the rings data into a computer program, that is designed to play notes based on certain aspects of the image being scanned. Similar to other software that can turn images into music, or turn music into video games.

You can take any random source and select notes from a C minor chord and it would sound similar.

In other words, you could put a circle of carpet or a pepperoni pizza under this machine, and it would still generate music, this is just an artist trying to sell records with a gimmick.

“… just an artist trying to sell records with a gimmick.”

Yeah… So? And that is all. 0{:-o[
