President Trump Addresses Nation 1/19/19 Immigration & Shutdown. President Trump is going to propose a compromise to Democrats to end the shutdown: The offer is expected to include Trump’s $5.7 billion demand for wall money in exchange for the BRIDGE Act — which would extend protections for (DACA) — President Donald Trump announced his proposed plan for a compromise on immigration from the White House on Saturday, as the government shutdown is poised to enter its fifth week.

“I am here today to break the logjam, and provide Congress with a path forward to end the government shutdown and solve the crisis on the southern border,” Trump said, before explaining his plan. The deal would include $5.7 billion in funding for “see-through steel barriers” in certain “high priority locations.” In exchange, he offered “three years for legislative relief” for 700,000 DACA recipients, extending their protection from deportation. Trump also offered a three year extension to the legal status of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders. Democrats have already suggested the proposal is a nonstarter, demanding the government be reopened before any broader negotiations on immigration take place.

It’s not clear Trump’s base will be pleased with the deal either In his speech, Trump issued a rebuke of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi by declaring “walls are not immoral.” He also emphasized the “humanitarian crisis” at the southern border, touching on drug trafficking, crime committed by undocumented immigrants, and the dangers facing mrants making the danus trek north. and also legislation to extend the legal status of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, according to a source with direct knowledge.

The deal was reportedly hammered out by Vice President Mike Pence and Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner. It’s unclear if Democrats will accept the deal, which Kushner is reportedly hoping will pass in the Senate and then put pressure on the House.
