The words freedom and liberty are all too often used as one or the other – many people falsely believe they are the same. Going to the spiritual definition, in 2 Corinthians 3:17 we read, “… and where there is the Spirit of the Lord, there is Liberty.”
Secular derivation of Liberty comes from the Latin word ‘libertatem’ (nominative ‘Libertas’) during the Roman Empire 27 BC–395 AD – meaning civil or political freedom, condition of a free man; absence of restraint; permission. The true word of freedom does not exist in the Bible, though some Bible translations will use liberty and freedom interchangeably.
The derivation of freedom does not start for nearly 1100 years later after the Latin word ‘libertatem’ came about, meaning “exemption from arbitrary or despotic control, civil liberty” is from the late 14th century. Also meaning “possession of particular privileges” is from the 1570s. Similar formation in Old Frisian ‘fridom’, Dutch ‘vrijdom’, Middle Low German ‘vridom’.
Today, there is an alliance between the two: Wherever there is freedom, there is Liberty. However, the existence of Liberty hardly means there is freedom (the U.K., Brazil, France, Germany are some recent examples where freedom is non-existent but Liberty does). See who you can criticize publicly, if a government officer or politician, then you have freedom – if not, most likely not.
What many are discovering today – free speech, in and of itself, is not enough. There is a mistake being made in honoring those that bully, mock, harass, stalk by treating them as equal as those of character, humility, respect, and honor. If we do that, where is the discernment between right and wrong? Yes, everyone’s liberty must be protected, however, that is an EARNED protection.
Anyone not protecting everyone’s liberty then warrants their own liberties to be shackled and sequestered by the evidence of their own words and actions. Anyone protecting a bully’s unearned liberties will lose their own in the process.
