Very early photography didn’t capture people walking around, in order to show up on a photograph you had to sit for quite some time, that’s why you don’t see any people it’s a pretty simple explanation. That’s why people didn’t smile in early photographs they had to hold the same pose for quite a long time in order for it to show up
